eyes lit up with excitement.
“Moon!” he called out, his voice overflowing with joy. He ditched Lachlan and headed straight for her.
Lachlan thought, ‘Is this really the same Karson I remember? The serious, composed, and knowledgeable director of the National Museum of Heritage? I’ve seen him so excited before. And respectful…
Lachlan fell silent.
‘I must be exhausted. Otherwise, why would I start imagining something so absurd? Come on, this is the director of the National Museum of Heritage!’
While Lachlan was still processing everything, Karson was already striding up to Stella, arms spread, ready to pull her into a huge hug.
The very next second, he slammed into a hard and firm chest.
“Who-” Karson blurted out, reaching out. But when he caught sight of the man’s stunningly perfect face, he couldn’t help but gulp. “M-Mr. Gray?”
Sebastian glanced down, face blank. “It’s me.”
Karson was stunned.
He sneakily shuffled a step to the left, stretching his neck to peek around.
Finally, Stella’s face popped back into view. As Karson was about to flash a big grin, Sebastian’s cold face blocked him again.
Karson was speechless.
“Sebastian,” Stella called out lazily from behind him. Karson could clearly see Sebastian freeze for a moment. Sebastian’s cold, deep eyes swept over him.
Karson wondered if Sebastian shot him a stare.
He thought, ‘Wait. Did Moon just call Mr. Gray Sebastian?’
“You… you guys, Moon… you and Mr. Gray…?” Karson stared at Stella, his voice shaking with disbelief.
Stella glanced up at him, then shot a look at Jaxon. “Next time, don’t drag your feet.”
Her voice was flat, but it was somehow commanding.
Jaxon didn’t know what to say.
Before Jaxon could respond, she looked back at Karson. “Come with me.”

She grabbed Sebastian’s hand and strode toward the kindergarten gate.
Karson couldn’t believe his eyes. He thought, ‘Wait, are they… actually holding hands? Stella is holding Mr. Gray’s hand.’
Outside, Stella pulled the specially sealed and preserved Grand Medicine Manuscript out of the car and handed it to Karson. “Here you are.”
Lachlan, who’d snuck after them, poked his head around and saw Karson take over the battered old book from Stella. Karson looked like he was about to burst into tears.
Karson said, “This book’s a total wreck. It’ll take at least a year to fix.” He anxiously examined the sealed book, then looked up at Stella with hopeful eyes. “Moon, do you have any free time? The young people in the Restoration Department are not capable enough.”
Lachlan was floored. Did he seriously hear that?
Stella leaned against the car door, sounding totally uninterested. “Nope, got no time.”
“Oh, come on, don’t do this to me!” Karson pleaded. If Stella helped them out, they could fix it in a week.
Stella explained, “Seriously, I don’t have time.”
Once Fabian arrived, she would go to the training base to scout for recruits.
“I’ll treat you to a big dinner!” Karson said.
Lachlan was stunned.
“No, thanks,” Stella replied.
Karson added, “I’ll get you a special bonus!”
Lachlan was stunned.
Stella replied, “No, thanks.”
Karson puffed out his cheeks, totally grumpy.
Just when Lachlan thought Karson was about to give up, the old man, with a dramatic huff and a loud smack, threw himself across the hood of the black Mercedes-Benz, arms spread wide.
“Then I’ll just die right here in front of you!” he declared dramatically.
John, who sat in the car, was stunned.
With everyone watching, he silently raised both hands to prove his innocence.
Stella, Sebastian, and Lachlan couldn’t believe their eyes.
Trying to prove his determination, Karson squirmed across the hood. “Moon, come on! Just work for me for

Karson was like a walking compilation of every stubborn old man she’d ever met. After years of dealing with their antics, she was totally unfazed.
“Sebastian, give him the number,” Stella demanded.
Stella raised an eyebrow at Sebastian beside her. “Okay,” he said, glancing at Karson.
Sebastian took out his phone and dialed a number.
The call was connected almost immediately.
He spoke briefly to the person on the other end, then handed the phone to Karson.
Karson was sitting cross-legged on the hood of the Mercedes-Benz. He snatched the phone and barked at it, “Hello? I’m the director of the National Museum of Heritage! Who the hell are you?!”
A slow, steady voice came through the other end of the line. “This is Bernard Harper speaking.”
Karson froze in place, utterly speechless.
He slid off the hood like a lifeless cardboard cutout, his eyes widening. Bernard Harper?
Karson panicked, his voice shaking. “M-Mr. Harper, sorry to bother you!”
“It’s fine!” Bernard sounded super laid-back.
“Yes, yes!” Karson said respectfully, not daring to step out of line.
Lachlan was totally floored.
‘Wait. Mr. Harper? Which Mr. Harper?’ he thought.
It was like Lachlan had just uncovered some earth-shattering gossip. He stared at Stella in disbelief and wondered if she had connections with that living legend.
