Chapter 2
Not long after I got back to my room, Flynn and Holly both walked in.
The second Holly stepped through the door, her eyes locked onto my son..
“Oh my God, he’s gorgeous–look at those chubby cheeks! You can just tell he’s gonna be smart.”
She spotted the blanket I’d wrapped him in and rushed over.
“Why are you using cotton? That’ll irritate his skin. Use these!”
She pulled out a whole bundle of clothes–silk, brand new, expensive–looking.
Then she leaned in, reaching for my baby.
I dodged her. My voice came out cold.
“He’s my son. I’ll take care of him.”
Holly’s face darkened. She forced a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Sure. You went to college–of course you’ll raise him well. Make something of him.”
She kept staring at my son, practically drooling with that maternal look.
Flynn jumped in right on cue.
“Mira, we need to pick a name. How about Jake?”
Before I’d given birth, Flynn had shown me a whole list of names.
He’d been obsessed with “Jake.”
Bet he and Holly came up with those names together.
I shut him down immediately. “No. His name is Derek.”
Flynn’s expression shifted. “We agreed you’d pick from my list. Jake sounds great.”
I held the baby out toward him. “Then you raise him?”
He wanted me fully invested in raising the kid, so he backed off.
Holly looked pissed, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“If you’re naming him yourself, you’d better treat him right.”

Chapter 2
“I’m waiting to see him bring honor to this family. Make something of himself.”
I said flatly. “No need to worry. You should focus on your own kid.”
At the mention of her child, Holly wrinkled her nose like she’d smelled something rotten.
“Mine’s just a little burden. Annoying as hell. Can’t stand looking at him.”
“And wouldn’t you know it–less than a day old and he’s already dead. Good riddance.”
A chill ran down my spine. My palms started sweating.
A little later–just a little–and I wouldn’t have saved my son in time.
And when Flynn and Holly talked about the dead baby, their faces were stone cold. Zero emotion.
I couldn’t help myself. “He really died?”
Flynn’s eyes flashed with contempt. He didn’t even hesitate.
“Of course. Newborns are fragile.”
“You need to take extra good care of our son, Mira. He’s this family’s only shot.”
