By the time we got to the school, a crowd had already gathered outside the principal’s office.

Quentin stood off to the side, head down, silent.

Next to him, a middle–aged couple relentlessly tugged at his shirt.

“We’re taking this all the way.”

“Just because our daughter made a mistake doesn’t mean she deserves to get beaten up for no reason!”

“The school owes us an explanation!”

The man in the black polo shirt grabbed Quentin by the collar, while the woman stood with her hands on her hips, face flushed with anger.

“And besides, he slept with our daughter! That deserves an explanation too!”

One vulgar accusation after another. We all frowned.

“What exactly are you demanding?”

Matthew walked in, his presence commanding the room.

Quentin lifted his head, and our eyes met briefly over the crowd.

That’s when I realized–his idea of “making it up to me” was going after Anna.

The couple noticed Matthew and Willow’s status immediately. Their haughty expressions shifted in an instant.

“Oh, well, it’s not like we need an explanation or anything.”

“It’s just that at such a young age, this kind of thing happening… if word gets out, it’s embarrassing.”

“How about we, as parents, arrange a marriage for them. Then the whole beating thing, the dating thing–we could just let it go.”

“What do you think?”

The man sidled up to Matthew, trying to ingratiate himself. Matthew took a step back.

Willow stepped forward. “Absolutely not!”

“Medical bills, emotional distress–name your price. But an engagement? Out of the question!”

The contempt in Willow’s eyes was overflowing.

Anna, sitting off to the side, looked pale as a ghost.

She knew. The Thornes would never accept someone from a family like hers.

And to Quentin? She was just a filler piece in a puzzle. Disposable.

The farce in front of us escalated, and I couldn’t even tell why Quentin intervened – to defend me, or to deflect

blame from Anna.

“Rachel, I made things clear with Anna.”

“From now on, she won’t be in our lives anymore.”

“Can we start over?”

Quentin’s voice was low, pleading. He reached for my hand. dodged and stepped back, standing behind my uncle.

Only then did Quentin notice Jasper. Panic flickered across his face.

“Mr.–Uncle Campbell?”

“Long time no see, Quentin.”

“I have to say, you’ve really surprised me this time.”

Quentin knew he was in the wrong. He lowered his head.

The principal’s office was a mess–voices overlapping, arguing endlessly.

Jasper pulled me out. We sat on the steps outside, looking up at the night sky.

He didn’t ask me anything.

In the darkness, tears slid down my face.

“Uncle, can you transfer me to another school?”

“I don’t want to stay here for the college entrance exams.”

“Okay.”

Quentin’s situation was eventually resolved with an apology and compensation. The Thornes were extorted for a huge sum of money.
