She couldn’t shake the feeling that something had quietly shifted between them.

After a full two minutes, Alexander finally spoke.

Elena sat on the hospital bed, pulling the blanket tight around her. It was as if she could chase away the chill clinging to her skin.

“What do you think I should tell you?” she shot back.

They were locked in a silent standoff. Both knew resentment hung heavy in the air, but Alexander had no idea why Elena was angry.

Still, he caved first.

He walked to her bedside, sighed, and sat down. Beneath the blanket, he found her cold hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were in the hospital?”

If he hadn’t come home to find Evelyn saying Elena hadn’t/been back in two days, if he hadn’t grown suspicious and called Sophia, he never would have known.

Elena stayed curled up, refusing to meet his eyes. “Didn’t feel like it. I’m not a child. There’s no need.”

“If you’re unhappy, just say so.”

“Did I do something wrong?” he asked.

“Was it not going to Morven with you?

“Or being too busy lately to spend time with you?

“Or not caring enough now that you’re sick?”

Alexander listed each possibility, one after another.

Elena still didn’t look at hini.

He sighed softly, brushing a hand gently through her hair. “Things will get better once this busy stretch is over. I know I’ve been at fault lately. Don’t be mad-”

Before he could finish, Elena spoke.

“Alexander, let’s get a divorce.”

Her voice was steady. She finally lifted her head and looked him straight in the eyes.

“I think… there’s no pointin torturing each other like this. I’ll have the baby. You can visit whenever you

want.”

She’d thought these words a hundred times. But saying them out loud still sent a sharp pain through her chest. Before tears could fall, she quickly turned her head and wiped her eyes.

Alexander sat frozen on the edge of the bed, like a statue.

Elena didn’t look at him. She didn’t see the flash of hurt, agony, and confusion cross his face.

“Reason?” His Adam’s apple bobbed, the word scraping out raw.

“I don’t want to be together anymore. That’s all.”

“Is marriage something you can throw away so easily?” he asked, his gaze piercing, as if trying to see into her soul.

Elena took a deep breath. “I’m not happy. You’re not happy either. Don’t you see? We haven’t had real time together in ages. You’re always busy. I’m never part of your life. I’m not your wife–not really. More like… someone you share a bed with. Only at night, when you lie next to me, do I remember we’re even married.

“You’ve never let me into your world. And I’m tired of fighting to get in. I told you what kind of marriage I wanted… a long time ago. If we can’t make each other happy, then we should just let go.”

Elena poured out everything she’d been holding back, every last word.

Some of it was true, some a lie.

She had tried to break through his walls. He’d always kept things from her. That exhaustion was real.

But it wasn’t all bad. She had been happy once. With him, she’d been happy.

That happiness just wasn’t enough to outweigh the pain and struggle anymore. She didn’t want to trap either of them.

“I refuse,” Alexander said immediately.

“I’m not asking you to decide right now. Just think about it,” Elena said. She closed her eyes. “I’m tired. Go home. I can take care of myself.”

“I’m not leaving you alone.”

He wouldn’t budge. He slipped off his suit jacket, tossed it aside, and sat again.

“I don’t want to look at you right now.” Elena’s voice was sharp, pointing toward the door. “Leave.”

Alexander acted like he didn’t hear her. He pulled out his phone and made a call. “Bring my documents to the hospital.”

He clearly intended to work right there.
