A flush of embarrassment crossed Elena’s face for a moment. Then she thought of the child growing inside her, Alexander’s child, and picked up her fork to eat without further hesitation.

Alexander was still on the phone. “Right, assign sorneone to handle it. No need to consult me about her company’s affairs from now on. Mm… I’ve got other matters to attend to.”

He ended the call.

Elena did not need to guess. He had most likely been receiving a report about the Scott Group.

She had looked up information about the company online over the past two days. Backed by investment from Pinnacle Group, the Scott Group had gained widespread favor and secured numerous business deals through its ties to Pinnacle Group.

Rumors had even spread across the internet. People joked that Alexander had showered Fiona and her company with lavish gifts, treating them like a second family. Others claimed Fiona was pregnant with his child, and these favors were his way of comforting her. Wild speculations ran rampant. Where Elena had oncé felt upset and riled up, she had grown calm.

Still, the gossip dulled her appetite. She set down her fork after just a few bites.

“Full already?” Alexander noticed her gesture. He stepped over, grabbed a tissue, and moved to wipe her mouth naturally.

Elena raised a hand to block him.

“What do you think about what I said earlier?” she asked. “I know you’re worried about Grandpa and Evelyn’s feelings. We could go through the formalities first and announce the divorce later. That works for me.”

A bitter, exasperated laugh escaped Alexander.

“You’ve certainly thought everything out for me. Should I thank you?” Anger edged his tone.

Her words were cut short. Alexander leaned forward, pulling her firmly into his arms. He pressed his lips roughly against hers, a harsh, punishing kiss laced with frustration. He nipped hard at her lower lip.

A sharp stinging pain spread through her lip, and she tasted the faint tang of blood. Elena struggled and tried to push him away, but he seized her wrists first.

“Alexander-”

He took advantage of her moment of outrage, deepening the kiss and swallowing her protests. He knew every vulnerable, sensitive spot on her body all too well. Elena quickly went limp in his embrace.

This was a hospital room, and he did not dare go too far. He finally pulled back when she gasped for air.

The mere mention of Nathan’s name grated on Alexander. He loosened his hold on her. “You two stayed at the same hotel in Morven. Word got around that he even went out of his way to buy you food from a restaurant, and ran into robbers along the way. I don’t know why you kept all this from me. But no matter if it’s an old flame reigniting or something else, I won’t-”

A sharp sound rang out. Elena’s palm connected hard with Alexander’s cheek. She had put all her strength into,the blow, leaving a clear red handprint on his skin.

“You’re shameless!” Her voice trembled with rage. “I’m so disappointed in you!”

She was his wife, carrying his child. He had no idea she had been abducted overseas, yet he knew every detail about Nathan sharing a hotel with her and fetching her meals.

“Nothing improper ever happened between Nathan and me. What right do you have to make such malicious assumptions?”

Elena fought back her tears, refusing to show weakness.

“Yes, we stayed at the same hotel. I heard he went to buy food for me too. But those were his choices, not mine. Why do you blame me for all of it?”

Alexander ran his tongue over his stinging lip, his brows drawing tight. A flicker of hostility flashed in his

“If nothing happened between you two, why hide it from me?” His tone turned icy cold. The way he looked at her felt utterly foreign.

“So what exactly do you imagine we did?” Elena let out a bitter laugh. “Do you think we snuck around behind your back, shared a room, and lay together while you were away?”
