Remington raised an eyebrow as he listened. "One kidney bought her the absolute trust of her mother-in-law and Nelson, paving the way for her to inherit everything her mother-in-law owned. Looking at it now, that was a highly lucrative trade."
Lizetta frowned deeply. "Then could she have been the one who swapped the three of us as babies? Maybe it wasn't Hans at all."
"Jolin testified that Hans swapped the babies," Jerome pointed out.
Lizetta shook her head.
"Hans was a violent drunk. Before he went to prison, he drank constantly, and he was an incredibly mean drunk.
Whenever he got wasted, he would beat people and run his mouth, spilling every secret he had. But I never once heard him mention swapping babies. Also, eight years ago, didn't Nelson suspect Andrea's identity and run a DNA test? The results were tampered with, right?"
Jerome nodded. "It looks like we need to reopen the investigation into all of this."
Remington's expression grew solemn, his eyes dark with thought.
He was thinking about Hans's early release from prison. Even at the time, the timing had felt far too convenient.
Hans was suddenly paroled right when Lizetta was heavily pregnant, and Remington hadn't received any prior notice.
Later, he found out the prison had just undergone a change in leadership, and the handover paperwork was botched, which was why he wasn't informed.
After that night, he had dug deeply into the parole details, hoping to find a connection between the new warden and the West family.
Unfortunately, he came up completely empty.
But now, it suddenly clicked for Remington—that warden was originally from Tranquil Meadows.
And at the time Lizetta's incident occurred, she had been spending a lot of time with Nelson and Bernice. The truth of her lineage had been on the verge of coming out.
Perhaps the invisible hand behind Hans's release wasn't the West family at all, but someone hiding much deeper in the shadows.
Someone who desperately wanted to stop Lizetta from returning to the Madden family.
Going back even further, to the time Lizetta had fled to Luminesia...
Remington suddenly looked at Jerome. "Do you remember when you helped Liz relocate to Luminesia, and you went to visit her once?"
Jerome remembered it perfectly. He was just caught off guard that Remington was bringing it up out of nowhere.
It had happened nearly a year ago.
"Why? Is Mr. Dashiell so bored he wants to interrogate me over ancient history?"
Jerome narrowed his eyes, sensing Remington had a hidden motive for asking.
Remington raised an eyebrow. Before he could speak, Lizetta grabbed his hand.
"Are you suspecting Eartha had something to do with that, too?"
Remington stroked the back of her hand and spoke in a low voice.
"I always thought it was strange. Even I couldn't track down your location; I only managed to confirm you were in Luminesia by tailing Jerome. So how on earth did Barbara's idiot nephew manage to track you down so easily?"
In the past, Remington had only ever suspected the Wests.
And back then, Lizetta's identity as the true Madden heiress hadn't been exposed yet.
So, he hadn't considered looking into the Madden family's circle.
But looking back now, it seemed incredibly likely that someone had intentionally tipped off Barbara's people, using them to do their dirty work.
