The maid's panicked shriek nearly made Eartha jump out of her skin.
Startled as she drank, she inhaled sharply, sending a massive pill lodging itself painfully in the back of her throat.
The taste was horribly bitter and choking.
She descended into a violent coughing fit, sending the glass of water in her hand splashing all over the bedsheets and her clothes, leaving her a drenched, pathetic mess.
"Careful!"
Conrad leaped to his feet, dropping to his knees by the edge of the bed to firmly rub her back. He shot a furious glare at the maid.
"What could possibly be so urgent that you have to come screaming in here like a lunatic?! Yes, we live in Zion City, but there are still laws here! Does Remington Dashiell really think he can just waltz in and start murdering people in broad daylight?! Get out of my sight. I'll be right down..."
Fuming with righteous anger, Conrad intended to march downstairs and handle the situation himself.
But before he could even finish his sentence, a voice as cold as ice echoed from the hallway outside their bedroom.
"I'm afraid the only person trying to get away with murder in this city is your sickly wife."
As the words dropped, Remington's towering, imposing figure appeared in the doorway.
Without a word, the two bodyguards flanking him stepped forward, grabbed the trembling maid who was blocking the path, and unceremoniously dragged her out.
Her legs gave out entirely in terror, and she didn't dare make a single sound as she was hauled away.
Remington strode directly into the bedroom, with Cedric following closely behind. There was zero pretense of politeness.
Conrad's face turned purple with rage. Eartha was dressed in nothing but a thin silk nightgown, soaked through from the spilled water, making her look both vulnerable and humiliatingly exposed.
Remington's blatant intrusion was a profound display of disrespect.

The readers' comments on the novel: Shattered Illusions Love Lies and Redemption (Lizetta and Remington)
Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
