Jane's panicked voice blared through the receiver. Eartha's face instantly turned a sickening shade of gray. Her bloodless lips parted, and she swayed violently on her feet.

She shot a terrified, wide-eyed look at Remington, gripping the phone so hard her knuckles turned white and began to shake.

"Did he say why?"

"No! He just called out of nowhere and said he changed his mind! He refuses to donate, and he's ripping up the agreements we already signed.

I'm speeding over to The Byron Family right now. Please don't panic, Ms. Porter, I'll talk some sense into him. How could he do this? You literally saved his family's life!"

The blaring sound of car horns in the background confirmed Jane was racing through traffic.

Jane promised to fix it, but Eartha knew with terrifying certainty that it was utterly pointless.
