Shattered Illusions Love Lies and Redemption (Lizetta and Remington) novel Chapter 1169

In Nelson's eyes, a man who proved unfaithful once should never be trusted again.

There were plenty of good men out there. Why go back to an ex?

Jerome chuckled. "Plenty of men who are better than him and like her? Care to give me an example?"

Nelson opened his mouth to list a few names, mentally running through his options.

When Lizetta first returned to Tranquil Meadows, the family had thrown a grand banquet to formally introduce their newly found princess to high society.

With her stunning looks, elegant aura, and gentle temper, countless young, successful men had naturally expressed their interest.

He used to think a few of them were worth a shot, but now, comparing them to Remington...

The old man choked on his words but stubbornly pushed through.

"Fine. Those boys might lack a bit in net worth and raw capability. But in terms of sheer character, any of them beat him by a mile! When picking a husband, you don't look at face value—you look at their moral compass! Your aunt is the perfect cautionary tale."

As he spoke, his expression visibly darkened with sorrow.

Jerome's face fell as well. He knew Nelson's deep-seated anxiety stemmed largely from the trauma caused by Conrad West.

Unable to bear seeing the old man look so defeated, Jerome forced a smile.

"Don't overthink it, Grandpa. She still has me, doesn't she? Worst comes to worst, I stay single forever and act as her permanent safety net. She can do whatever she wants, and if it all falls apart, she can always just come home."

Hearing this, Nelson laughed in sheer frustration. He grabbed a fountain pen from his desk and chucked it at him.

"This is all your fault for being so useless! You're brilliant, accomplished, and haven't even been married once! Tell me, how in the world did you manage to lose to a secondhand man!?"

Jerome shrugged helplessly.

"Even if he's secondhand, he's a secondhand man she broke in herself. Women are nostalgic. What was I supposed to do? She clearly got that trait from you. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself, not me."

Nelson bristled, but then a genuine smile broke through.

"True. She gets that right from me."

"Where's Grandpa?" she asked.

"Is Grandma asleep?" he asked at the exact same time.

Both of them had kept their voices to hushed whispers.

Startled for a second, they exchanged an understanding smile.

"She's out cold," Lizetta said softly.

She cracked the door back open, letting Jerome peek inside at the old woman sleeping soundly on the bed, before gently clicking it shut.

"Grandpa's fine. He's got plenty of energy—he just chewed me out," Jerome replied.

Lizetta looked surprised. "What did he yell at you for?"

Jerome sighed dramatically, shrugging. "For having zero charm and losing to a divorced man."
