If Remington had sworn he would keep Hanna locked away for the rest of her life, Nelson would have found it impossible to believe.
"As for what you said about my father disliking Liz, you don't need to worry about that either."
A flicker of dark, self-deprecating mockery crossed Remington's eyes.
"Now that my father knows Liz is the Madden family heiress, he'll be even more desperate for me to win her back than I am."
It was a sickening way to describe his own father, but Nathan Dashiell was exactly that kind of man.
Nathan's previous disdain for Lizetta had stemmed entirely from her lack of background. The man was cold, selfish, and worshiped nothing but power and profit.
Nelson let out a sharp scoff. "Your parents are exactly the kind of people I despise. Growing up in that kind of toxic environment warps a person's nature. I simply do not trust you."
Remington felt a pang of helplessness. He knew that no matter what he said, Nelson's deep-rooted resentment and distrust stemmed from the past.
It wasn't something that could be erased by a single conversation or gesture.
Remington nodded slowly. "Then take your time to observe and test me. You can't just deny me any chance at all, can you?"
In truth, Nelson wanted nothing more than to deny him completely.
In his eyes, the simple fact that Remington had failed to show up to their wedding was enough to have him permanently disqualified.
Not to mention all the other infuriating, reckless things the man had done.
But the agonizing reality was that his granddaughter was utterly fixated on this one man.
He couldn't force her hand. Reluctantly, despite a thousand objections, Nelson knew he had to compromise.
He couldn't disregard his granddaughter's happiness and force her to spend the rest of her life alone.
Nelson stared at Remington. "Clean up the West family's mess first. Once that's handled, you can come back and talk to me."
Now that Eartha had been arrested, her conspiracy with Martin West was bound to be exposed.
Once a single crack appeared in the West family's armor, tearing their empire apart would be infinitely easier.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring?
