The glass lowered to reveal a man's strikingly handsome, sharp profile. He was leaning back lazily against the seat, draped in a light blanket across his torso and legs.
He looked as though he had simply pulled over to take a nap.
Shocked, Captain Briggs immediately averted his gaze the moment he met the man's eyes.
Even though Remington's gaze carried no explicit anger, it radiated a chilling, oppressive authority honed by years of wielding absolute power.
Rumor had it this young billionaire wasn't even thirty yet, but his aura easily rivaled that of the esteemed Nelson Madden himself.
Briggs marveled internally, thinking that even if Nelson opposed the union now, given Remington's sheer influence and Lizetta's clear affection, an alliance between the Maddens and the Dashiells was practically inevitable.
Too intimidated to peer any deeper into the dim cabin, he simply asked out of courtesy.
“Mr. Dashiell? Why are you sleeping out here all alone?”
Remington gave a slight nod, his voice carrying the husky, gravelly tone of a man freshly roused from sleep.
“I had nothing else pressing, so I decided to stay a little longer.”
As he spoke, he cast a longing glance toward the estate.
That single look was all it took for Briggs' imagination to run wild, painting a tragic romance of two star-crossed lovers kept apart by familial misunderstandings.
With their love unapproved, this powerful man had parked outside in the dead of night, quietly protecting the woman he loved.
Plus, with all the chaos the Madden family had endured today, it made perfect sense he was worried something else might happen.
Moved by this deduction, Briggs' tone grew incredibly respectful. He bowed slightly.
“If you need me to pass a message to Ms. Madden, or deliver anything to her, please just say the word.”
Remington offered a grateful nod in return.
“Thank you, but she's already asleep. I won't disturb her. You boys have a good shift; I'll head out after a smoke.”
“Understood. Have a good night, sir.”
