Lizetta was blindsided by the mention of Joy.
Back in Zion City, during Andrea's interrogation, she had been on the verge of breaking down and confessing everything to implicate Eartha.
But right at that critical moment, a young officer had walked in to bring her a glass of water, and Andrea's attitude had instantly shifted.
Afterward, Remington had his men monitor that young officer.
They soon discovered the officer was acting on orders from Warden Sterling Thorne.
Warden Thorne had been transferred from Tranquil Meadows. Following Eartha's arrest, he had been suspended and placed under investigation.
He had already confessed that he released Hans Gardenia after receiving massive bribes from Eartha.
At the same time, he was scouring the prison system for a matching kidney donor to save her life.
Before transferring to Zion City, he had worked at the police precinct, where he had pulled several illegal favors for Eartha in exchange for cash.
Thinking of all this, a sickening wave of hatred washed over Lizetta.
Her eyes cut like knives. "How dare you mention Joy! You orchestrated the whole thing, using Conrad and his daughter to murder my baby! You have no right to speak his name!"
Lizetta was trembling with unrestrained fury.
Just thinking about Joy made her wish she had a blade in her hand so she could butcher Eartha herself.
Eartha, however, remained entirely unbothered, even letting out an indifferent smirk.
"Lizetta, watch your words. I simply pulled some strings to get Hans released early. I had a sudden attack of conscience for replacing his daughter and wanted to offer him some compensation. I certainly never ordered him to kidnap you."
Lizetta scoffed, refusing to entertain the lie.
Eartha was only saying this because Hans was dead, leaving no witnesses.
But the warden had kept his own insurance—recordings and chat logs of his transactions with Eartha.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
