Remington spoke firmly. “I'll have my people investigate.”
“No wonder I didn't know about her. Sylvia left Tranquil Meadows long before I returned. But would someone as ruthlessly calculating as Eartha ever be genuinely kind to a servant?”
Lizetta wasn't sure if she had simply demonized Eartha in her mind, but she truly felt that every single action the woman took was dripping with ulterior motives.
“At the time, Eartha handed over a lump sum of three million dollars for Sylvia's retirement. Sylvia's departure from the city was highly publicized.”
Nelson tapped his fingers against the armrest.
“Eartha actually earned a glowing reputation for treating her staff well and repaying loyalty. People talked about it for quite a while.”
“But Grandpa, Eartha has never been the type to draw attention to herself in Tranquil Meadows,” Lizetta pointed out, feeling the situation grow increasingly suspicious.
As far as she knew, Eartha had drawn plenty of criticism back in the day for her affair with Conrad West.
Because of that, Eartha had spent years meticulously playing the role of the perfect, obedient daughter-in-law to win Nelson's favor. She was a master of endurance.
She definitely wasn't one to make a spectacle of herself.
“Liz is right. Making such a massive scene out of a retirement feels incredibly staged. It's almost as if she wanted the entire world to know Sylvia was gone and had completely severed ties with her,” Remington analyzed gravely.
Nelson nodded.
Back then, he had simply assumed Eartha was hungry for good PR.
Now, looking at it through a different lens, it was highly plausible that Sylvia's public departure was nothing but a smoke screen, allowing her to operate in the shadows and handle Eartha's dirty work.
“Grandpa, what do we know about Sylvia's family?”
Remington pressed, firmly convinced that this Sylvia was deeply involved.

Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring?
