The more Nathan spoke, the more agitated and emotional he became, but his words were ultimately nothing more than a performance of self-pity.
Remington felt absolutely nothing. Completely out of patience, he pushed the phone back toward Nathan.
"Don't you think it's a little late to ask for forgiveness and play the loving father? I'm thirty, not thirteen. But you do have a point about one thing. Rest assured, I will fulfill my legal obligations. Once you hit retirement age, I will pay your monthly alimony on time."
Nathan felt a sickening wave of despair. Had he just poured his heart out for nothing? Did Remington honestly think he cared about a monthly alimony check?
His vision swam with black spots. Seeing Remington grab the door handle, he forced back his boiling rage.
He remembered Fiona's words. She had told him that finding Joy might be his one and only chance to bridge the gap with his family.
If he blew this, his relationship with his son and daughter-in-law would freeze over permanently.
Nathan knew the old woman was right. He completely agreed with her.
Swallowing his pride, he called out to Remington's back.
"These shares aren't for you. I'm giving them to my grandson. You don't have the right to refuse them. Ask Lizetta."
Remington didn't look back. Even if Lizetta hadn't been officially recognized by the wealthy Madden family, she wouldn't have cared about these shares in the past, either. Still, Remington didn't bother arguing with Nathan.
Nathan had a point. It wasn't his place to reject a gift meant for Lizetta and their son.
He strode out of the stairwell, only for a tiny figure to suddenly dart directly into his path.
Thud.
The little body crashed right into his legs and wobbled precariously, about to fall.
With lightning reflexes, Remington reached out and caught the tiny figure.
It was a very short, very small little girl in a hospital gown. Her hair was tied up into two cute space buns with pretty red ribbons dangling from them.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
