Nelson sat by the edge of the bed and pulled Bernice down to sit beside him, pointing at her as he tried to teach Joy how to address his great-grandmother.
Joy stared intently at Bernice, blinking his large eyes in confusion.
He had spent a lot of time with Fiona Dashiell over the past few days, and he was likely struggling to understand why his great-grandmother had suddenly changed her appearance.
But Joy really liked this new great-grandmother, too.
"Grandma," Joy called out sweetly toward Bernice, his pronunciation impressively clear.
It was the very first time Lizetta had heard Joy pronounce a title other than 'Mom' with such flawless clarity. Even his attempts at 'Dada' still sounded a bit messy.
She crouched down in front of Bernice and smiled. "Grandma, Joy really loves you."
Bernice stared deeply at Joy, her eyes burning with intensity, before she turned her gaze to Lizetta.
"Elsa, you have to take good care of yourself! You can only take proper care of the baby if you're healthy. A child without a mother is just too pitiful."
Lizetta froze. Ever since Bernice had recognized her, the older woman had rarely called her Elsa Madden again.
Yet now, she was once again confusing Lizetta for Elsa.
Lizetta's eyes turned slightly red. She knew that seeing Joy must have triggered Bernice's tragic memories of the day Elsa gave birth.
Back then, Elsa's health had already been rapidly deteriorating. Bernice had spent those days drowning in grief and terror, constantly terrified her daughter would pass away and leave the baby behind.
And unfortunately, that was exactly what happened. Elsa hadn't even made it another two years before she was gone.
It was a pain that Bernice would carry for the rest of her life.
"I will. My body is very healthy now. Just look at my complexion—doesn't it look perfectly fine?"
Lizetta gently took Bernice's hand and pressed it against her own cheek.
Her cheeks were rosy, and her eyes were bright and clear.
He shot Nelson a look of utter helplessness. He had genuinely never felt this stranded in his entire life.
Nelson simply gave him a subtle nod. "Go on and call her. Why are you looking at me?"
Since the old man didn't have an issue with it, Remington turned back to Bernice.
"Mom, I'm listening. Is there something you need me to do?"
Bernice scrutinized him intensely. After a long moment, she seemed satisfied enough to offer her earnest instructions.
"You need to treat Elsa better! Her health is fragile, and giving birth was so incredibly hard on her. If you aren't perfectly gentle and considerate with her, it won't do! I absolutely won't allow it!"
As the older woman spoke, a memory seemed to flash through her mind, replacing her stern expression with raw fury. She slammed her hand down heavily on her thigh, her face turning pale with distress.
Lizetta rushed to comfort her. "Please don't be angry, don't worry! He treats me wonderfully. I haven't suffered at all."
Remington quickly caught Bernice's hand as well. "I promise you, I will always treat her right. I will love her, protect her, care for her, and remain entirely loyal to her. You can supervise me yourself. If I ever do anything wrong, you can hit me just as hard as you did just now."

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
