After months of his mother’s pleading. Jack finally agreed to do what he should’ve done a long time ago. He planned

But the house had been stripped clean, every trace of her erased. He racked his brain, then finally drove to her old unit, hoping to track down her commanding officer, maybe ask if there was anything of hers left in the duty locker, a jacket.

“Williams is pushing for a death certificate. Wants to hold a funeral. What do you want me to do?”
A pause on the other end. Then a voice he knew down to his bones.
“Just handle the paperwork. I’m not coming back.”

Jack’s heart stopped.
He pressed against the door, barely breathing.
“Understood. We’ll file it.” Colonel Walsh sighed. “Stay safe out there. Desert’s no joke.”
Jack burst through the door.
“Where is she? Tell me!”
The commander’s face went cold. “Classified.”
