The guards had called someone to collect him. He woke up in the hospital, burning with fever, lost in dreams.
Dreams of her.
He saw her the way she was at the beginning, a girl with fire in her eyes, too stubborn to back down from anything
Training sessions. Catching her staring, then watching her pretend to adjust her gear, ears red
He’d never paid attention back then. Too many girls chasing him. She was just one of them.
But she’d followed him into special forces. Fought beside him. Their rhythm was better than anything he’d had with
Jessica. She always knew what he needed before he asked.
Then Jessica jumped. He got hurt. Forced out.
And she was there. Bag packed. Ready to go with him.
He’d taken it for granted. Assumed she’d always be there.
In the fever dreams, he saw the moment her eyes changed.
When did it happen? When he chose Jessica again? When he blamed her without proof?
She’d stopped fighting back. Stopped explaining. Just… absorbed it.
The light in her eyes dimmed. Then died.
Until nothing was left but cold.
Sarah didn’t love him anymore.
He’d never believed it could happen. Her love felt like gravity, constant, unquestionable.
But it had ended. And he’d killed it.
He woke up screaming her name.
Weeks later, barely healed, he went back to the desert.
He searched for her base. Found nothing but restricted zones and official warnings.
His family’s service record bought him leniency. They even reached out to her, through channels, asked if she’d see him.
Talk him down.
She said no.
