Quinn snuggled against Raymond's chest, her voice muffled. "Dante and I got into an argument, and old Mrs. Hayes happened to overhear."
"She knows about our divorce now."
"That's for the best."
It was better for old Mrs. Hayes to know the truth sooner rather than later, saving Quinn from the constant agony of deciding whether to confess or keep hiding it.
More importantly, Dante could never use the old woman as an excuse to bother Quinn again.
Still, recalling the heartbroken, disappointed look in the older woman's eyes left Quinn feeling a pang of sorrow.
"Raymond, I feel like I've let her down."
Raymond gently rubbed her back, offering soft reassurance. "This isn't your fault. Don't blame yourself."
"Old Mrs. Hayes has always been a reasonable woman. I'm sure she understands and won't hold it against you."
"Yeah!"
Quinn lifted her head from his chest, a bright smile breaking across her face.
"Let's go! Let's go home."
After chasing them out the gate, Dante stood frozen on the stone steps a short distance away.
He watched as Quinn willingly ran toward Raymond and threw herself into his arms.
He watched as Raymond leaned down slightly, murmuring soft words of comfort.
He watched as little Leo stood obediently to the side, tilting his head and smiling at the embracing couple.
Such a beautiful, picture-perfect scene was agonizing to him, as torturous as a knife twisting slowly in his gut.
It was so warm, so idyllic.
And it was a beautiful world he could never, ever be a part of.
Raymond's gaze shifted over the head of the woman in his arms, landing perfectly on Dante's devastated figure.
He swept a cold, indifferent glance over him; in his eyes, a man like Dante was entirely unworthy of sympathy.
Withdrawing his gaze, he focused solely on Quinn again, raising a hand to affectionately tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
