There were many people at home today, so Dominic prepared six dishes. After setting them on the table, he called everyone over. “All right, dinner’s ready.”

He glanced around the living room. The three women sat on the sofa, spaced neither too close nor too far apart.

No one spoke. Each of them seemed lost in her own thoughts.

That eased Dominic’s nerves. As long as they had not started fighting, things were manageable.

Of the three, Autumn worried him the least. Isabella was far too emotional. As for Jessica, she was plainly unhinged. There was no predicting what she might do or say next.

As expected, Jessica reacted first. “Dominic, I’m coming!”

She sprang to her feet and jogged over.

She looked at the dishes, inhaled deeply, and beamed. “Dominic, you’re the best. These are all my favorites.”

Isabella followed more slowly. When she heard that, she let out a cold snort. “Just eat. Why all the nonsense?”

“What does that have to do with you?” Jessica shot back without the slightest restraint.

Autumn did not join the exchange. She walked over, took her seat, and smiled at Dominic. “Come to think of it, this is my first time trying your cooking.”

Dominic nodded. “Then give it a taste. Not to brag, but my cooking isn’t something just anyone can manage.”

Autumn’s eyes brightened. She picked up her utensils at once and took a bite. She gave him a thumbs–up and praised him enthusiastically. “You really weren’t bragging. Your cooking is even better than an expensive hotel’s.”

A quiet sense of satisfaction rose in Dominic, and

smiled modestly.

Isabella watched the two of them laugh and talk. A sour ache spread through her chest.

In the past, her husband had cooked only for her and Lilith, and occasionally for Katherine.

Without warning, her nose stung, and the urge to cry welled up.

Jessica noticed at once and wasted no time twisting the knife. “Oh my, ex–wife, why are your eyes red? Don’t tell me you’re about to cry. Hehe.”

The comment only made Isabella’s eyes burn more. Tears shimmered as she snapped at Jessica, “What does it have to do with you? Shut up!”

Even her voice trembled with a sob.

Dominic frowned. His tone turned cold. “Just eat. If you want to fight, take it outside.”

Jessica answered with a careless “Oh.”

Isabella’s heart shook. The grievance pressed down on her with nowhere to go. She clutched her plate, lowered her head, and took small, mechanical bites.

Tears fell one by one into the food.

Jessica rolled her eyes and spoke again. “Hey, ex–wife, you’re only eating plain pasta. Try something else.”

“All right. You shut up too,” Dominic said, casting a calm but warning glance at Jessica.
