“Thank you, Mr. Fleming,” the siblings said together.

Ryan lowered his voice. “After I leave, no matter what Mr. Fleming says, you must listen. Do you understand?”

Max and Yara nodded.

Dominic saw through Ryan’s thoughts and spoke with a half–smile. “Ryan, are you asking me to take care of them?”

Max and Yara were Ryan’s constant worry. Although Dominic had temporarily resolved their immediate trouble, Max’s limited intelligence and Yara’s fragile condition still left him uneasy.

Feeling ashamed, Ryan pleaded with Dominic once more. “Mr. Fleming, I know this may count as moral coercion, but only you can help them. I’m not asking for special treatment. I only ask that they be able to live with dignity.”

“Very good.” Ryan turned to Max, his expression serious. “Max, when I’m gone, you must listen to Mr. Fleming. Whatever Mr. Fleming tells you to do, you do it. If he is ever in danger, no matter when, you must protect him. Do you understand?”

Max nodded blankly.

“Repeat it,” Ryan said.

Max thought for a moment. “Whatever Mr. Fleming tells me to do, I’ll do it. If Mr. Fleming is in danger, no matter when, I must protect him.”

Ryan finally let out a soft sigh of relief. He turned to Dominic. “Mr. Fleming, please don’t worry. They won’t cause you trouble. Although Yara has disabilities, she understands everything and is very smart. Max is very obedient. Whatever you ask of him, he

will do it.”

Dominic nodded. “What did the doctors say about their conditions?”

Earlier, he had wondered whether Max’s condition might involve a lost soul, but after meeting him, he realized that was not the
