Dominic returned to the room and found Isabella bent over Lilith, murmuring softly as she tried to coax her back to sleep.
Lilith’s eyes were wide and bright. The more Isabella urged her to close them, the more alert she seemed to become. Frustration crept into Isabella’s voice, and impatience tightened her movements.
Dominic watched in silence with a faint smile. He offered no help. Instead, he pulled a chair closer, sat down, and scrolled through his phone as if the small struggle on the bed had nothing to do with him.
Isabella shot him a look and redoubled her efforts.
Time slipped by unnoticed.
At last, Lilith’s breathing evened out. She surrendered to sleep.
Isabella eased herself off the bed, stepped over carefully, and tugged at Dominic’s sleeve.
“Honey, it’s time to sleep,” she whispered.
The lights were already off. Moonlight streamed through the window and washed the room in silver, catching in her eyes and making them gleam.
Dominic gave a quiet hum, set his phone aside, and stretched out on the bed.
The bed in his hometown house was large and pushed against the wall. Isabella settled Lilith near the wall, lay down in the middle, and turned toward Dominic with open fascination, studying his profile in the dim light..
He did not return the look.
“Go to sleep,” he said evenly.
He lifted her hand from his chest, placed it aside, and closed his eyes.
Peace lasted only a moment.
A warm hand drifted over him again, slow and deliberate.
Dominic’s eyes snapped open. He turned his head and met Isabella’s gaze.
She froze.
“I’m not asleep yet,” she muttered.
.
She knew he would never initiate anything while he was awake. She had planned to wait until he drifted off. She had not expected him to remain so alert, as though guarding against her.
Lowering his voice so as not to wake Lilith, Dominic said, “Isabella, if you move again, I’ll sleep in the car.”
His tone was quiet but unyielding.
Isabella pouted but relented.
“Fine,” she said, her voice edged with reluctance.
Dominic gave a small nod and closed his eyes once more.
This time, sleep claimed him.
Sometime in the night, Isabella’s arm and leg found their way over him. Even in sleep, she seemed unwilling to let him go. She tugged his arm closer and pillowed her head against it, curling into him until she found a comfortable position. A faint, satisfied
smile softened her face.

A rooster’s sharp crow shattered the quiet.
Dominic opened his eyes to the pale light of morning. When he shifted, soreness flared along his arm.
Isabella’s drowsy voice drifted up beside him. “Honey, don’t move. Sleep a little longer.”
He frowned but carefully freed his arm and rose to dress.
As soon as he finished, Isabella blinked awake. She yawned and pushed herself upright. The sheet slipped to her waist, and sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating her smooth, luminous skin.
Dominic glanced at her, then looked away. “Call Lily. We’re heading back to Skyline City.”
Isabella nodded and leaned over to wake Lilith.
Dominic stepped outside. His grandfather sat in a wicker chair, basking in the morning sun.
Harold looked up. “What’s going on between you and that Hale girl?”
Dominic understood at once that he meant Jessica.
“Just a friend,” he replied.
Harold gave a slow nod and did not press further. After a moment, he said, “Don’t waste a good woman.”
‘A good woman…‘ Several faces flickered through Dominic’s mind. The last one to remain was Katherine.
He gave a quiet hum. “I’ll go make breakfast.”
