Chapter 440

Dominic said nothing more. He walked out the door, got into his car, and headed for the west side of Skyline City.
Night had settled in. Once he left downtown, the streets thinned out until only scattered headlights cut through the dark. He drove for more than half an hour before the lights clustered again, growing denser as he approached the waterfront.
The road ended at the docks.
Cargo ships eased into the harbor at intervals, their horns low and distant. It was almost 8:00 p.m., yet workers still moved briskly beneath the floodlights, loading and unloading freight. Massive warehouses lined the pier in long, shadowed rows.
Dominic did not know which one he needed, so he pulled over and parked.
He stepped out and had just lit a cigarette when a young punk sauntered over. The man’s hair was dyed silver, a metal stud glinting in his ear.
He looked Dominic up and down and curled his lips into a roguish smile. “You the guy named Fleming?”
Dominic flicked ash to the ground and nodded.
The punk gave him another slow appraisal, then sneered. “Come with me.”
He turned and walked off without waiting. Dominic followed. Before long, they stopped at the entrance to a large warehouse.
The man yanked the iron door open. It screeched on its hinges, revealing the scene inside.
Dominic’s expression darkened at once.
Max hung suspended in midair, wrists bound and body limp.
Dominic stepped inside without a word.
A man’s indifferent voice drifted across the cavernous space. “You’ve got guts. You actually dared to show up.”
He sat in a chair near the center of the warehouse, about forty years old, a long scar slashing across his face. A metal lighter clicked open and shut in his hand.
He was not alone. At least 30 men stood scattered around the warehouse, all watching Dominic with open hostility.
Dominic lifted his gaze to Max. His voice was cold and steady. “What did you do to him?”
The scarred man smiled faintly. “The kid’s stupid, but he’s tough. We broke the sticks on him, and his bones still didn’t crack.”
Max’s body was covered in wounds. His head hung forward, blood drying at his temple. He was clearly unconscious.
Dominic inclined his head once. “I’m here. Let him go.”
A scoff came from the side. “You think we’d release him because you asked?”
A man and a woman emerged from the back, both wearing smug expressions.
Dominic looked at them and understood immediately. “So it’s you.”
They were Max and Yara’s uncle and his wife.
Scanning the crowd, Dominic also spotted Danny.
Satisfaction gleamed across Danny’s face. After the previous incident, he had refused to repay the money and had gone to seek out the scarred man, who held a certain reputation in the underworld. But the moment the man saw Dominic’s business card, he refused to get involved. Left with no options, Danny had repaid the money.

He had never expected the scarred man to approach him today and offer help. The promise of revenge and the chance to reclaim his cash had thrilled him.
Evita fixed Dominic with a vicious glare. “If you want to save Max, pay back our money first.”
Dominic’s tone remained even. “How much?”
Greed flashed in William’s eyes. “500,000 dollars.”
Dominic let out a soft, contemptuous snort.
Mistaking his reaction for shock at the amount, Evita adjusted her posture and tugged her neckline lower.
She turned and bent slightly toward the scarred man, her voice syrupy. “Scarface, he extorted 200,000 from us. Add interest and emotional damages. 500,000 dollars isn’t too much, right? I only want 200,000. The other 300,000 can be your reward.”
A playful look crossed Scarface’s face. He reached out and grabbed her chest. “Fine. We’ll do it your way.”
William’s face flushed with anger, but he did not dare speak.
His wife straightened, newfound confidence radiating from her posture. She looked at Dominic with open arrogance. “All right. 500,000 dollars. Hand it over now. Otherwise, neither you nor Max is leaving here today.”
Dominic met her gaze. “What if I refuse?”
“Then you’re disrespecting Scarface,” she sneered. “And if that happens, it won’t just be you two. We’ll drag that bitch Yara here too. Let the soldiers have some fun.”
Dominic’s eyes sharpened at once, the air around him turning cold.
The woman showed no fear. She leaned closer to Scarface and added with a malicious smile, “Don’t let my niece’s illness fool you. Girls like that are the most interesting. If you’re curious, you should check her out.”
