Started, Dominic hurried toward her. “Hey, Autumn, what’s wrong?”

Tears streamed down her face like broken pearls, sliding over her delicate cheeks. The sight was painful to watch.

Without a word, she ran to him and wrapped her arms around him, sobbing uncontrollably.

Jewel felt a sharp pang in her chest. She had assumed a brief hug would be harmless, but Autumn showed no sign of letting go.

Unable to stand by any longer, Jewel gently pulled her away. She cleared her throat and said in a steady voice, “Autumn, try not to cry right now. Let’s talk this through calmly.”

Unaware of her aunt’s hidden motives, Autumn took the gesture as comfort. She wiped her tears and choked out, “Dominic, please don’t leave, okay?”

Jade had locked her in her room, and she had only regained her freedom after calling her father. When she saw what had happened and realized Dominic had left without attending her birthday party, it felt as though her heart had been split open. She had ignored her father’s advice and insisted on chasing after

him.

Dominic understood the reason for her distress. He offered a reassuring smile. “Autumn, don’t be upset. This has nothing to do with you, and I’m not blaming you. We’re still good friends.”

His smile stirred a surge of emotion within her. “Dominic, I don’t want us to be just friends. I want to-”

The words hovered on the verge of confession.

She forgot that Jewel was still standing there.

Jewel’s heart skipped. She cut in quickly, “It’s windy out here, and it’s not ideal to stand around. Since it’s your birthday, why don’t we go somewhere to eat?”

Dominic glanced at his watch. “Yeah, it’s about time for a meal.”

The courage Autumn had worked so hard to gather slipped away. She lowered her head and nodded.

The three of them walked together.

Autumn cast a furtive glance at her aunt, suspicion stirring in her mind. Earlier, she had been pulled away from Dominic. Now she had been interrupted mid–confession. It did not feel like coincidence.
