"Hulda, you had the time to cater to other men, but you couldn't spare a single second for your own son?" Herbert's eyes were brimming with utter disappointment.
Hulda stood frozen in place, staring at the fiercely hostile family surrounding her.
"I never ignored him. I swear I never got any messages from him," she said defensively. She was his mother; no matter how deeply the boy had broken her heart, she would never purposely ignore a cry for help.
"What is all this screaming?! This is a hospital, we have a surgery going on in there!" an angry nurse snapped, bursting out of the operating room doors. "Are you the family of the boy inside?! Don't you know he's in surgery?! Do you want him to die on the table?!"
Faced with the nurse's furious scolding, the entire group instantly went dead silent.
Officer Coleman immediately seized the chance to de-escalate. "She's right, the kid is on the table. We can sort out everything else after he's out of danger."
Cora was practically panting with rage, still glaring absolute daggers at Hulda, but thanks to the nurse and the police, she was forced to swallow her screaming.
Coleman signaled for one of his female deputies to guide Cora over to a row of chairs further down the hall, putting physical distance between her and Hulda.
Valery and Wade followed with dark, sour expressions, though their resentful glares remained glued to Hulda.
Herbert looked away, leaning back heavily against the wall.
Sylvie stood where she was, covering her mouth as if she were deeply traumatized by the screaming match, though a faint, satisfied gleam flickered in her eyes.
The hallway finally returned to a state of tense quiet. Coleman let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Seeing the nurse about to slip back inside the operating room, Hulda quickly called out, "Nurse, how is he?"
The nurse gave her a critical once-over. "Still in surgery. The doctor will come out and give you an update when there is one. Honestly, what kind of parents are you people, letting a kid wander off like that..."
Muttering her disapproval, the nurse disappeared back behind the doors.
Hulda stood alone near the entrance, her heart heavy with guilt.
The police had absolutely no reason to lie. Which meant Miles definitely told that scammer exactly what the officer had relayed.
