Why was she so hellbent on holding onto Jude Foster?
Because it wasn't fair. She had waited years for this. Their wedding was finally on the horizon. And above all, she had genuinely loved him.
They were officially engaged. The wedding was scheduled right after the new year—just three months away. The invitations had already been sent out.
Everyone in their social circle knew she was getting married. If she backed out now, she would be the ultimate laughingstock.
Fine. She had thick skin. She could handle the humiliation. But she absolutely refused to let them win.
She refused to just step aside and let a backstabber like Jillian have him.
But what did refusing actually accomplish?
Jude called her a hedgehog, and he was right. She was entirely defensive, entirely guarded.
But not for much longer. Jude had methodically ripped out every single one of her quills, stripping away her armor and leaving nothing but open, bleeding wounds.
Once her final defense was gone, how was she supposed to survive?
...
Just as Melanie had promised, Jude's name flashed on Cleo's screen.
"It's your sister's birthday. Your mom told us to go together. Where are you? I'll pick you up."
Cleo had just stepped out of the shower. Towel-drying her hair, she walked toward her walk-in closet. "I thought we weren't speaking. Are we making up now?"
Jude paused, his tone defensive. "Do you want to make up?"
Hearing that arrogant, unyielding tone, Cleo knew exactly where the conversation was heading. If she engaged, they would just end up screaming at each other over the phone.
"My apartment."
Night fell, heavy gray clouds suffocating the Elmwood sky. The atmospheric pressure felt dense enough to crush a person's lungs.
A sleek black car sat parked by the curb. Jude Foster was leaning against the driver's side door, smoking a cigarette.
Cleo walked over in her heels, her hips swaying subtly. Her sharp gaze flicked to the scattered cigarette butts near his shoes. She offered a mocking smile.

I would have accepted the jerk husband ending up with the heroine if he’s only powerful, intelligent but he’s so powerless and so stupid....
Can you make Ethan be the endgame? That Miles is a total jerk....
