She Was the Treasure All Along novel Chapter 163

Lucian took in their pale faces, then stood up. "It seems my presence is no longer needed. I'll be going now."

Loyce rose as well. "I'll see you out."

"Let Forrest do it," Gordon said suddenly. "Loyce, come help me to the garden for a walk. I'd like to see the flowers."

The faint smile on Lucian's lips flattened, and a complex emotion flickered in his eyes.

Forrest stepped between him and Loyce. "Let's go. I'll escort you."

Loyce accompanied her grandfather to the glass conservatory behind the manor. Inside, a vast new patch of roses was in full, glorious bloom, their petals shimmering beautifully in the moonlight.

"Is there something you wanted to talk about, Grandpa?"

Gordon considered his words for a moment before asking, "What do you think of that young man from the Shapiro family?"

Loyce blinked. "He's a credit to the nation, a man of rare talent."

"And do you... like him?" Gordon pressed. "I know you're at an age where these feelings start to blossom, and I wanted to say..."

"You think I'm dating Lucian?" Loyce asked with a small smile.

Gordon hesitated, then said, "Lucian has a betrothal, an arranged marriage. The girl is still studying abroad in Engloria, but she'll be returning soon."

Loyce was taken aback. "I didn't know that. Why are you telling me this, Grandpa?"

Gordon's voice was sincere, and looking at his aged face, Loyce couldn't bring herself to refuse. She nodded gently. "Don't worry, Grandpa. I understand completely."

Only then did Gordon seem to relax. Loyce strolled with him through the garden for a while longer before returning to her bedroom.

As if on cue, a notification popped up on her phone.

Lucian's timing was impeccable. He had sent a text asking what she and Gordon had talked about.

Loyce stared at the screen for a moment before typing a reply: [A private family matter. Not something I can discuss.]

Back at the Shapiro estate, Lucian gripped his phone, his eyes dark and heavy.
