She Was the Treasure All Along novel Chapter 465

After days of extreme weather, the sun finally broke through the clouds.

Loyce steered her electric wheelchair toward Lucian's tent. Robert and a few guards were stationed outside. Upon seeing her approach, Robert was about to announce her, but she raised a hand to stop him.

From inside the tent, Joanna's voice drifted out.

She was setting out carefully prepared food next to Lucian, her tone cloying and eager. "You're just recovering from a major injury; you need to eat something light. I made you some nourishing chicken soup and some herbal supplements. It was such a shame that the food I brought last time was thrown out before it even reached you. Please, eat a bit more this time."

"What got thrown out?" Lucian asked.

Joanna forced a casually dismissive tone. "Oh, it's nothing. Just... when you brought the Lonsdale heir out of the snowy mountains, I wanted to bring you some food. But I ran into Ms. Loyce on the way. She wouldn't let me give it to you and forced me to dump it out."

"I don't know why she has it out for me," Joanna sighed dramatically. "I just want to look after my son."

"She doesn't have it out for you," Lucian's voice was flat, devoid of any emotion. "She had her reasons."

Joanna had fully expected him to defend her, not to openly side with the girl. Her mood soured instantly, though she plastered on a tight smile. "I suppose so."

"It's not an 'I suppose.' She did." Lucian picked up a spoon and took a small sip of the soup. "She is a doctor. She knows better than you do how to care for a patient."

"Right, of course. My mistake," Joanna said, twisting a handkerchief around her fingers. Feeling utterly stonewalled by this stranger of a son, she stood up. "Well, take your time eating. I'll head back now."

"Mhm," Lucian replied indifferently.

When Joanna pushed open the tent flap, she bumped right into Loyce. Robert, reading the room perfectly, immediately chimed in, "Ms. Loyce is here to check on the General's injuries."

Joanna forced a smile. "I see. He's eating right now, but you can go right in."

Loyce gave her a curt nod and rolled her wheelchair into the tent.

The space was well-lit, the sharp scent of antiseptic much stronger here than outside.

Lucian was propped up on a military cot. One heavily bandaged leg was carefully elevated. He had loosely thrown on a green military shirt, the top buttons undone, revealing a chest strapped with fresh gauze.

At the quiet whir of the wheelchair, he looked up.

Their eyes met.

"You're awake?" he spoke first, his voice rougher and deeper than usual. "How is your leg?"

"It's fine." Loyce rolled right up to his cot. "Forrest's condition is stable. Hank arranged a helicopter to take him to the hospital."
