Sybil felt utterly humiliated and awkward, but the sight of Karl pulling up in his luxurious Maybach sent a massive shockwave through her.
"Need a ride, Sybil?" Karl rolled down his window, smiling warmly, acting as if he hadn't noticed Thane's livid expression.
Sybil looked at the gleaming luxury car, then at Thane beside her, who didn't even have a ride and was only capable of throwing a helpless tantrum. The scales in her heart instantly tipped to the extreme.
She made her decision almost immediately.
"Mr. Karl, that would be wonderful." She flashed an apologetic look at Thane. "Thane, it's too far from the city. Let's just take Mr. Karl's car back."
Karl also looked at Thane. "For Sybil's sake, I suppose I can give a broke kid like you a lift."
"Broke kid? Who are you calling broke?!" Thane had never been insulted like this before and swung his fist toward the driver's side. Sybil's patience for Thane was completely gone. She grabbed his arm and snapped, "Are you done throwing your little childish tantrum?! Karl is the only one willing to give us a ride! Do you plan on walking all the way back?!"
"I'll just call one of my buddies to pick me up," Thane said defensively.
He had other friends. Unfortunately for him, one of them drove past at that exact moment, merely giving a quick wave before speeding off, leaving Thane in a cloud of dust without stopping for a second.
Sybil's voice grew sharp. "Buddies? Thane, are you coming with me or not?"
Pushed into a corner, a reluctant Thane had no choice but to get into the car.
Once again, he felt that his current downfall—being poor and looked down upon—was entirely because of Sybil. And now she didn't even understand his grievances. Was his devotion really worth it...?
For once, he sat in the car in complete silence.
"I heard those filthy rich tycoons were having a yacht party. Didn't think we'd actually snag a few fat sheep. Hahaha."
"With a car that flashy, it's hard to miss."
"Listen up! If you want to live, get us a hundred million! One penny less, and you're all dead!" the lead kidnapper growled, tossing an old burner phone at Sybil's feet. "Which one of you is paying?"
Sybil was terrified out of her mind. "A hundred million?! I... I don't have that kind of money!" she sobbed.
She looked pleadingly at Karl, but Karl just looked helpless. "I'm a foreigner. My money is in overseas accounts. There's absolutely no way I can transfer that kind of money right now. The banking procedures are incredibly complex, and they would investigate where it's going. Besides, I only brought enough travel money for my trip to Metropia. I really don't have any other funds I can access."
Since Karl looked like a foreigner, extorting money from him would naturally be difficult. The kidnappers turned their attention to Sybil and Thane, tapping their faces lightly with the steel pipes. "So, which one of you is holding the cash?"
