Thane thought he was a dead man. His heart was heavy with guilt toward his parents and an overwhelming, boiling hatred for Sybil Seabrook.
But just as the darkness seemed to swallow him whole and the kidnappers moved in for the "kill," a dim light flickered on in the corner of the abandoned warehouse.
Under the harsh glare, Tucker Crown and his wife stood quietly alongside Loyce, Lucian, and the so-called "kidnapper boss."
The boss pulled off his ski mask, revealing a face Thane vaguely recognized.
Robert gave a casual wave. "Hey there. Didn't scare you too much, did I?" He chuckled, waving a hand in front of Thane's stunned face.
Even Karl, who was supposed to have safely escaped, was standing comfortably next to Loyce, an amused smirk playing on his lips.
Thane froze, his mind blanking completely as he struggled to process the scene.
Mrs. Crown's eyes were red. "You foolish boy. Oh, my foolish boy!"
Tucker walked over and clapped a heavy hand on his son's shoulder, his voice thick with emotion. "Sometimes people only learn the hard way. Do you finally understand why we all tried to keep you away from Sybil?"
Loyce and Lucian stood by, their expressions perfectly calm.
It hit him like a freight train.
There was no kidnapping. No near-death experience. This entire nightmare was an elaborate setup orchestrated by his parents and Loyce!
It was an intervention, a desperate ploy to rip the blinders from his eyes and show him exactly who Sybil really was.
"So..." Thane stammered, dazed. "Disowning me... that was fake? And the car at the docks?"
"I arranged it," Loyce replied smoothly. "And Karl is a friend of mine."
Karl offered a dramatic bow. "I must admit, I think I have a real knack for acting. I might just take it up professionally."
As Karl turned to leave, Lucian raised an eyebrow. "What exactly did you give him?"
Loyce leaned in and whispered in his ear, "Karl is a highly sought-after plastic surgeon. Occasionally, some of his more... enthusiastic clients try to pay for his services with their bodies."
Lucian caught on immediately. "Ah. So he burns the candle at both ends and needed a stamina supplement?"
Karl, halfway to the door, coughed loudly. "I heard that!"
Loyce laughed softly, while Lucian looked Karl up and down. "Wouldn't have guessed it." It certainly clashed with the man's perfectly tailored, gentlemanly persona.
Meanwhile, blissfully unaware of the truth, Sybil had been released by the kidnappers in a completely different location. She was still riding the high of Karl's promise, fully believing he would sweep her away in a few days. She was finally going to escape this ruined town and leave her shattered reputation behind.
With the multi-billion-dollar contract officially handed over to Lucian, a heavy, suffocating tension blanketed the Winslet family. Yorick Winslet's parents, who were usually abroad expanding the family business, had rushed back to Metropia.
