Mr. Nash nodded.
"And if I had died in that sinkhole accident..." Sybil asked, her voice eerily calm. "Who would have inherited the money?"
Confused by the dark question, Mr. Nash answered honestly. "It would have defaulted to your next of kin—your parents. Barring, of course, the potential legal challenges from his children I mentioned."
Sybil lowered her head. A second later, her shoulders began to shake. A bizarre, chilling laugh slipped from her lips.
"Ha... haha... So that was it. That was it all along!"
She threw her head back, letting the tears stream freely down her face. Everything made perfect, sickening sense now. Her mother had known about Horace's wealth and estranged family from day one. Even after using her to secure the A7 and A8 parcels, they had planned to squeeze the very last drop of blood from her veins.
She was their ultimate insurance policy. If she died, they would inherit Horace's entire fortune. Even if Macrostar went completely bankrupt, Horace's money was more than enough for them to flee overseas and rebuild their empire.
From start to finish, Sybil's life had been nothing but a pawn's tragedy.
Why on earth was she still trying to protect those two demons?
Leroy Seabrook rushed into the ward carrying a basket of fruit. Seeing his sister sobbing hysterically, he rushed to her side. Leroy had completely stayed out of his parents' scheming, but given the massive news scandal, he felt obligated to check on her.
He grabbed her hand, his face etched with worry. "Sybil, what's wrong?" Thinking the police were bullying her into a confession, he added, "If you don't want to talk to them, you don't have to. Please don't cry."
Sybil looked at her brother through tear-blurred eyes, her expression slightly deranged. "Why should you?"
"What?" Leroy asked, confused.
"Why do you get to live a perfectly normal life, completely insulated from the storm?!" Sybil screamed, her voice cracking. "Because you're the son?! Because you're the sole male heir?! So I'm the one who deserves to shoulder all the misery while you live happily ever after?! Is that what Alicia thought?! Is that what that bitch wanted?!"
"Sybil!" Leroy yelled back. "What the hell are you talking about?!"
Leroy had no idea that his mere presence was the final spark that ignited the powder keg. Any lingering hesitation Sybil had about relying on her family incinerated in an instant. She was about to inherit a financial empire—she didn't need to rely on anyone.
She whipped her head toward the detective and shouted, "I stand by every single word I said to the press! It was all true! I am willing to provide any evidence I have! I will tell you everything I know, down to the last detail!"
"I know you have access to some of the most ruthless international lawyers. I need you to hire one to ensure I secure every last penny of Horace's estate."
Loyce leaned in slightly. "And why exactly would I do that?"
Sybil met her gaze without flinching. Her voice was raspy from weakness, yet fiercely resolute. "I will testify and make sure they never see daylight again. Furthermore, once I inherit the money, I will personally wire you the exact value of the A7 and A8 parcels. That cash injection will completely wipe out Macrostar's impending debt crisis. Do we have a deal?"
When Macrostar gambled everything to buy those parcels at an astronomical price, it meant that if anything went wrong with A7 and A8, their capital chain would snap, plunging the company into immediate bankruptcy—which was exactly what was happening right now.
Sybil's offer was incredibly lucrative.
It was also exactly what Loyce had planned all along. She smiled faintly and extended her hand. "Larry will make sure you get every cent, and he'll do his best to keep you out of prison."
A massive weight lifted off Sybil's chest as she shook Loyce's hand.
Watching the entire exchange, Leroy looked deeply conflicted. "Sybil... are you really going to completely destroy our parents?"
