Yale's breath caught in his throat. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead.
Those accounts were where he had been funneling and laundering money for years, leveraging his position and Ares Global's networks. It was his personal war chest—his ultimate fail-safe and the entire reason he had committed treason in the first place!
He thought he had covered his tracks perfectly!
"Tanur, I..." Yale's voice cracked as he desperately tried to explain.
"Save it." Tanur’s tone was terrifyingly calm, exuding absolute dominance. "Every man has his price, and I know exactly what yours is. Loving money isn't a crime; loving money and getting the job done makes you an asset. Everything you’ve done for Ares over the years earned you that money. But—"
That single "but" almost made Yale's heart stop beating.
"But, if something happens to my daughter, and I determine it was because of your 'caution' and 'self-preservation'..." Tanur’s voice slithered like a venomous snake. "Then all that money will evaporate in the blink of an eye. Every asset under your name and your family's names, including the 'retirement funds' you've squirreled away across the globe, will legally and permanently find its way back into Ares's accounts. What do you think happens to a traitor who tries to line his own pockets once he’s outlived his usefulness?"
Why had he betrayed his country? Why had he lived every day walking on a tightrope of anxiety? Was it not so he could spend the rest of his life swimming in endless wealth?
"Sir..." Yale’s voice was hoarse, thick with the agony of his impending surrender. "What about X..."
"X is a businessman. An arms dealer," Tanur stated with absolute certainty. "He might have struck a deal with the government, but his core driving force is profit and his own code of conduct. We clashed with him because we broke his rules and encroached on his territory. Kidnapping Luna is retaliation, and it's him flexing his muscles. What does he want? Money, market concessions, or for me to back off in certain sectors. All of that is negotiable. You are going there as my representative to negotiate. As long as you don't drag their domestic politics into it, he won't flip the table. Remember, he cares about business. He is not their lapdog, and he won't do their dirty work for free."
