Yorick Winslet hadn't expected to run into Loyce here, let alone witness the entire agonizing spectacle of Lucian treating her like a stranger. Watching the betrayal unfold twisted his gut. Unable to hold himself back, he had approached her, stripping off his coat to wrap it around her shoulders when he noticed how thin her dress was.
"I'm in town closing a deal," Yorick said smoothly. He carried himself with much more authority and grit than he had in the past. As they left the exhibition hall, he smoothly transitioned into inviting her to dinner.
Helena tactfully excused herself, heading back to the studio once her job was done.
But she never made it to her car. At the end of a quiet side street, a sleek black SUV cut her off. The back door opened, and Lucian sat inside, demanding she get in.
Lucian sat with his legs crossed, exuding a dark, suffocating intimidation that made Helena's skin crawl. She took a nervous sip from her water bottle. "You want to ask about Ms. Lonsdale?"
"I am surrounded by lies," Lucian said coldly. "I want you to explain exactly what you meant back there."
Helena sat in silence for a long moment before looking him dead in the eye. "I don't know what the hell is wrong with your brain, sir. But everyone in Harmony Country knows that Ms. Lonsdale is the love of your life. When your chopper went down, she tore the world apart looking for you. And now that she finally finds you, you've magically turned into someone else's fiancé."
"She betrayed me," Lucian stated, his voice devoid of emotion as he tapped his ruined leg.
Helena knew nothing about the island or how he had lost his leg, but she answered with absolute, unwavering certainty. "Ms. Lonsdale would never betray anyone. If things went wrong, it was because you screwed up."
She unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out of the car, turning back to look at him one last time. "Sigrid is a snake. If you really plan on marrying her, then honestly? I'm just glad fate stepped in to filter out the trash that didn't deserve Ms. Lonsdale in the first place."
"The whole world knows she's your one and only," she added, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "But if you're gone, there will be countless men lining up to take your place."
Her words echoed in Lucian's skull, haunting him long after she walked away.
Later that evening, at one of the Oceanic Federation's most exclusive restaurants.
As the future patriarch of Stellar Trust, Horace had already started handing Lucian pieces of his empire to manage. Lucian walked into the dining room, trailed by a pack of high-ranking executives.
They were heading for the VIP suites upstairs when Lucian caught sight of two figures sitting at a window table. He stopped dead in his tracks.
Yorick poured Loyce a glass of fresh juice. "How is Elise doing?" she asked.
Yorick smiled. "My grandmother is doing great. You look good, too. You seem... a little healthier."
Loyce took a sip. "A major headache has been taken care of. I'm in a good mood."
