A massive, blood-red banner was strung up against the pale gray facade of the building, violently jarring like an open wound. The bold, black letters screamed:
"UNFILIAL DAUGHTER HELENA EMBEZZLED HER PARENTS' RETIREMENT FUND! WON'T ANSWER CALLS, WON'T COME HOME! AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!"
Standing directly beneath it were two familiar figures. Her parents.
Helena’s fingers clamped around the door handle. A wave of suffocating panic and sheer rage threatened to pull her under, but she forced it down, locking her jaw.
Morris didn't hit the brakes. He gave her a brief sideways glance and drove straight down into the underground VIP garage.
"Were those your parents?" he asked calmly.
She nodded, her voice tight. "Yes. I'm so sorry."
"I'll have security handle it," he said, his tone perfectly smooth. "I expect you to be entirely focused today. I have a solo recital tonight."
"I know," Helena took a jagged breath. "It won't affect my work."
Prepping for a solo recital was like coordinating a military operation. A Morris Lonsdale concert wasn't just a gig; it was a sold-out, high-society event where scalpers moved tickets for astronomical sums.
By the time Helena stepped out of the garage elevator, her face was a mask of flawless professionalism. It was as if the banner, the parents who had been protesting for three days, and the public humiliation had absolutely nothing to do with her.
Morris headed straight to the rehearsal hall.
