She Was the Treasure All Along novel Chapter 968

Yelena watched Helena brush past her and hurry down the hallway. After a moment, she stepped into the studio, her heels clicking loudly against the hardwood. "Your face right now is a picture."

Morris looked at his reflection in the wall-to-wall mirrors. His expression was as cool and unreadable as ever. "Is it?"

"Absolutely." Yelena nodded firmly. "I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but it's painfully obvious you've got some history with your assistant."

Morris ignored her, casually walking toward the door. "Prying into other people's private lives is a good way to find trouble."

"Oh, I know," Yelena laughed, undeterred. "But today was an accident. And honestly, if you care about her that much, you really should clear the air."

Morris stopped in his tracks. "Clear what air?"

"You should tell her you're not seeing anyone." Yelena tried to hide her smirk but failed miserably. When Morris shot her an icy glare, she raised her hands in surrender. "Look, she was clearly trying to provoke you with all that talk. In her mind, you obviously did something unforgivable."

The silence stretched for a few beats before realization dawned on Yelena. "Wait... oh my god. When she came to your estate the other night, did she think you and I...?"

"That would be a massive misunderstanding," Yelena said, clutching her chest in mock horror.

"It is," Morris said dryly, not looking back. "My standards aren't that low."

Yelena gasped, deeply offended. *Keep acting tough,* she thought bitterly. *You're going to completely lose it when she actually moves on.*

Morris walked out of the studio and headed down the corridor toward the parking garage. Halfway there, he stopped.

He stood by an open window at the end of the hall, letting the cool evening breeze wash over him as he stared out at the Metropia skyline.

Helena's words kept echoing in his mind. *"I'm not going to repay you by getting on my knees, I'm not going to repay you by spreading my legs... You don't need any of that from me anymore."*

She had drawn a line in the sand, and he recognized exactly what it meant. She was telling him that he was no longer worth her emotional investment, throwing the massive gap in their social standing right in his face.

Even though he had never intended to make her feel inadequate.

Morris's fingers tapped a slow, agitated rhythm against the windowsill before he forced himself to stop.

He told himself this was for the best. She had found her own path. He no longer had to worry about getting a phone call in the middle of the night, wondering if she had finally snapped and covered her bathroom floor in blood.

Swain was ordinary. He was a sunny, aggressively normal guy—even if Morris believed the man was entirely beneath her.

He stood by the window for a long time, watching the city lights bleed into the darkness until the sky was pitch black.
