“These guys mean trouble. Do you think they’re here for us?” Frank hunched his shoulders, anxiety creeping into his voice.
He could run his mouth all day, but he’d never actually been in a fight.
There were at least twenty or thirty men closing in on them.
“Shut up,” Shawn snapped, jolting Frank out of his panic.
He was with the toughest guy in school—who’d dare mess with him?
Frank felt his nerves relax a little. He rubbed his chin with one hand, trying to look nonchalant.
“Maybe those two gangs are about to throw down. We should get out of their way—no sense blocking their path.”
He shuffled closer to the wall, pulling Shawn with him, and gestured for Stella and Sabrina to follow suit. Might as well clear the path for these supposed brawlers.
Stella rolled her eyes. Was he for real?
Shawn couldn’t even muster the energy to respond.
Seeing no one backing him up, Frank awkwardly straightened, frozen in place. He didn’t dare step forward, but he wasn’t about to bolt either. His eyes stayed locked on the black-clad men massing at both ends of the alley.
Sabrina quickly pulled out her phone. She shot Samuel a location pin and sent a single word:
Help.
Her gut screamed that these men were after her. The look in their eyes was lethal.
There were only four of them—three, really. Frank wouldn’t last a second in a fight; he’d just slow them down.
Their attackers all carried metal pipes or knives.
Except for Frank, the other three tensed, ready to spring into action at any moment.
The circle of men closed in, stopping about ten feet away. They slapped their weapons against their palms, staring at the group as if sizing up prey.
Even Frank, oblivious as he could be, realized something was wrong.
Everyone stared at him, dumbfounded.
Stella pinched the bridge of her nose. If Frank ever went into scamming, he’d probably make a fortune. How did he have the nerve to spout nonsense facing a pack of thugs like this? Did he really think they’d buy it?
The redhead spat on the ground, swearing as he hefted his pipe.
“You think I’m an idiot? Lying to my face—boys, show them what happens to smartasses!”
And with that, iron pipes and gleaming blades came crashing down.
“Ahhh!” Frank screeched, his voice cracking in terror.
Surrounded front and back, there was nowhere to run.
Luckily, Shawn reacted in the nick of time, yanking Frank out of the way as a blade sliced dangerously close to his ear. Any slower, and Frank would have lost it.
These guys clearly weren’t playing by any rules.
