Delilah had a habit of always assuming the worst, so hearing Caleb's reassurance made her breathe a massive sigh of relief. "You silly girl, if he's so capable, why haven't you brought him home for us to meet?"
"Don't people only meet the parents when they're absolutely certain they're going to get married? Mom... I'm twenty-three. I can't drag every single boyfriend I have back to meet the family, right?"
Delilah stiffened instantly. "Exactly how many are you planning to date?"
"Hard to say."
Lyra grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl and took a bite. "Dating around a bit isn't a crime, is it?"
"Fine, fine, it's not a crime. I'm not some incredibly close-minded mother, as long as it's a completely normal relationship." Since Caleb had already met the man, Delilah felt entirely reassured. Otherwise, her imagination would have easily spiraled into the worst-case scenarios.
After finishing her conversation with her mother, Lyra headed to the nursery to play with the babies. The two little ones seemed to recognize her instantly, eagerly reaching out their soft little hands and causing her to laugh non-stop.
It wasn't until the nanny came in to prepare their formula that she reluctantly handed the babies over.
Leaving the nursery, Lyra retreated to her own room, and Caleb promptly followed her inside. Getting straight to the point, he demanded, "Are you and Rowan together now?"
Lyra looked up and countered, "How did you figure that out?"
"Your behavior has changed way too drastically lately. You never used to stay out all night. I went over to Jameson Group today to look for Rowan, and his assistant told me he hadn't even shown up to work by ten. I tried calling you, but you didn't answer, and when I called the house, they said you never came home last night. Combining that with his sudden goodwill gestures toward Fairchild Holdings, I figured you two had to be together."
Lyra didn't bother denying it. "Don't tell Mom. We're going to break up very soon."
Caleb frowned deeply. "Did you intervene in Jasmine's relationship? Is that what caused their breakup?"
The accusation made Lyra's face freeze, and she immediately shot back coldly, "Don't speak nonsense about things you don't understand." Shoving him toward the door, she added, "Just get out. I want to rest."
