As soon as the news of Rowan and Sylvia's impending marriage swept the city, Lyra didn't hesitate for a second. She immediately booked her flight out of the country and started packing her bags at record speed.
At the dinner table that evening, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet. Delilah set down her utensils and sighed. "It's for the best. With all these twists and turns, it was obviously never meant to be."
Delilah looked at her daughter and asked, "So when are you planning to come back?"
Lyra lowered her eyes. "I'll come back after their wedding."
For the rest of the meal, the family ate in complete silence, no one speaking another word.
Sitting across from her, Caleb felt a bitter taste in his mouth. A while back, Rowan had practically handed him two incredibly lucrative projects. Back then, everyone assumed the two families were about to merge through marriage, so Caleb had accepted them without a second thought. Who could have known things would turn upside down so fast? Now, he would have to return everything to Rowan.
Caleb held little Harry, muttering under his breath, "I really don't know what kind of powerful man your aunt thinks she's going to marry."
Lyra glanced up at him.
She knew her brother didn't have the memories of what happened to her. He couldn't possibly understand the tangled, dark history between her and Rowan. Unable to explain herself, she simply withdrew her gaze in silence.
Standing nearby, Andrea frowned slightly. After Lyra returned to her bedroom, Andrea advised in a low voice, "Miss Fairchild, you don't actually need to go out of your way to hide abroad."
Lyra kept organizing her suitcase, neatly folding her clothes and tucking them inside. "I'm just worried Rowan will find a way to justify everything to himself again."
"Though, now that I think about it, that's pretty much impossible."
After all, she had asked his own brother to kill him. She had definitely crossed his bottom line.
Pausing her packing, she started rummaging through her drawers and storage bags. "Where's my passport?"
