She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 9

Exhausted after a long flight, Lyra was gently shooed off to bed by her parents.

Back in her room, she took a hot shower. Right before drifting off to sleep, she checked her bank balance. She still had a few million dollars left.

She had grand plans ahead of her, and she would need every cent of it to execute her plans.

In her past life, she had ended up entirely destitute, unable to scrape together even a small loan when everything fell apart. Because of that, watching her balance drop gave her massive anxiety.

She still had a lot of upcoming expenses, but fortunately, in addition to the generous monthly allowance her father provided, she would soon be drawing a real salary at Fairchild Holdings.

Her California startup hadn't turned a profit yet, but she knew it was only a matter of time.

The next morning, Lyra woke up with one goal in mind: reporting to the office.

There was a reason she was so desperate to start working at Fairchild Holdings immediately. The company was currently housing several traitors—people whose betrayals had directly led to the corporate empire's collapse in her previous life. Even though she wasn't marrying Rowan this time, and he hadn't yet weaponized those insiders against her family, Lyra was already plotting ways to fire every last one of those opportunists.

It was all about striking first to eliminate the threat.

"It's almost the holidays. If you really want to work at the company, it's better to wait until the new year begins..."

Over breakfast, Arthur tried to convince her to delay her start date, but Lyra couldn't afford to wait that long. "Dad, I want to get a head start on learning the ropes."

Seeing his daughter so eager to prove herself, Arthur found it impossible to say no.

He smiled and nodded, though he made sure to lay down some ground rules for office conduct, stressing that she couldn't simply throw her weight around as the boss's daughter.

Lyra naturally agreed to every condition.

"So, what position were you hoping for?" he asked.

"I want to be your secretary."

"Just a secretary?" Arthur was clearly taken aback that she aimed for such an entry-level role, especially reporting directly to him.

Knowing that most young women despised working under their fathers, he double-checked. "You don't want to work with Caleb? You really want to be my secretary?"

"Yes. Your secretary."

Caleb, who had just sat down at the table, immediately chimed in, sounding slightly offended. "Hey, I need a secretary too."

And in this life, she would do whatever it took to protect that happiness forever.

...

Lyra hopped into the passenger seat of Caleb's car, and they set off.

As they navigated the morning traffic, Caleb glanced over at her. "While you were gone for six months, Rowan and Jasmine officially got together."

It was exactly as Lyra had expected. The two of them had been practically inseparable.

"Mom and Dad have been pretending not to notice, and no one from their side has brought it up, either."

By "their side," he meant the Jamesons.

"I doubt Rowan is having an easy time of it, though. Charles and Victoria are probably giving him hell about it at home."

Lyra frowned slightly. Any resistance from the elders would only be temporary. Parents rarely ever won those kinds of wars against their own children.
