Chapter 4
Lorelei stepped in front of Eason, acting like she had every right.
“You were gonna marry him anyway. So what if it’s just a house? Your company is gonna be his too eventually.”
“You should hand over the house and the company yourself.”
“But instead, you wanna kick him out?”
“Don’t tell me you’re trying to be one of those wannabe girlbosses online. Just wait till Eason dumps you–then you’ll learn your place.”
I couldn’t believe it.
Lorelei was a woman, and yet every word out of her mouth put women down.
She sympathized with men so much, maybe she thought she was one.
Fine.
She’d learn the hard way one day, when a man screwed her over.
I didn’t bother arguing.
“Leave or don’t. If you won’t, I’ll get 911.”
Eason hesitated when he saw I was serious.
But Lorelei yanked his arm.
“You think you’re scaring anyone?”
“Fine. You won’t let me stay in this shitty place? Then you don’t get to either!”
She stormed into the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of cooking oil, ran into the bedroom, and started pouring it all over the curtains and wardrobe.
My eyes went wide. I tried to stop her.
Lorelei yelled at Eason.
“Stop her! If you don’t teach her a lesson now, you think she won’t pull this shit on you every day after you marry her?”
That was all it took. Eason grabbed me around the waist without hesitation, holding me back from getting near Lorelei.
All I could do was watch as she emptied the oil, pulled out a lighter, and set the curtains and clothes on fire.
With the oil fueling it, the flames shot up fast.
Lorelei coughed from the smoke, shoved me aside, dragged Eason out.
Then she slammed the bedroom door shut and locked it from the outside.
I didn’t make it out in time.

Chapter 4
The fire had already spread across half the bedroom. Heatwaves slammed into my face, burning hot.
I pounded on the door in terror.
“Eason! Open this damn door right now!”
Eason probably wanted to, but Lorelei stopped him.
“Eason, I’m doing this for your own good!”
“Wait till she begs you. Then we’ll talk.”
Eason hesitated for a second.
“Babe, Lorelei’s right. You should’ve given me the house and the company a long time ago.”
“You’ve got me. That’s all you need, right?”
“If you agree right now, I’ll open the door and let you out.”
The fire kept spreading. My hair was already singed and curling, thick smoke forcing me into violent coughing fits.
The moment I tried to speak, my throat felt like I’d swallowed knives.
I couldn’t get a full sentence out.
Lorelei kept pushing.
“She’s still this stubborn? Guess the fire’s not big enough yet. Wait a little longer.”
Eason’s response-“Alright.“–sent my heart straight into the abyss.
I stopped counting on them. Stumbling, I ran into the bathroom.
I turned on the shower, soaked myself, and curled up into a ball.
Through the haze, I heard Lorelei scream in panic.
“The fire’s spreading out here!”
Eason sounded panicked. “What about Karina?”
Lorelei cursed.
“Are you serious right now? Still worry about her?! You wanna die?”
Then I heard footsteps running away.
They just left me there. In the fire.

Smoke seeped through the cracks under the bathroom door.
My breathing got harder and harder. My vision blurred.
Just when I thought I was really going to burn to death here…

Chapter 4
The bathroom door was forced open.
“Ma’am! Are you okay?”
Firefighter.
The second I was saved, I grabbed his hand, my voice hoarse.
“Call the police.”
“This was arson.”
“They tried to KILL me!”
