Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Damien was right-I’m just some girl from Kansas who got lucky.
His mom loved me. His grandparents loved me. They said I had “good energy,” promised me stock options the day I said yes.
Being charming is a talent. And I’m talented as hell.
Truth is, I almost walked away. Rich guys are messy.
All that monastery talk? I didn’t buy it for a second.
My sister wanted to strangle me. “Are you a virgin?”
No. I’d had boyfriends. Four, maybe five.
“Then why are you being such a hypocrite?

“Look, you’re gonna sleep with someone either way. Might as well be Damien. He’s rich, he’s hot, his family adores you. Ride it out for a few years. If it doesn’t work, divorce him and keep the money.
“And if he actually becomes a monk? Even better. In-laws who worship you, a fat bank account, husband who’s
never home. You’d be an idiot to say no.
“A trust fund beats a paycheck.”
So I became the small-town girl who married into Manhattan royalty.
I smiled through the whispers, picked at overpriced food that never filled me up, wore designer shoes I couldn’t get wet, and watched my account grow by seven figures.
Life was so hard. Truly unbearable.
So yeah, if a few extra guys wandered through? I earned it.
Damien had seven friends. I worked my way through six of them over three years.
Six months each. Very democratic of me.
Just when I was ready for number seven, his mother’s birthday rolled around.
She summoned me back to the estate.

Stared at my stomach. “Three years and nothing. That boy really doesn’t work, does he?”
“We’re careful.”
“You’re still using protection?”
I nodded.
Rich people might be wild, but they’re not stupid.
Damien rarely showed up anywhere with me. We’d barely even seen each other.
Downstairs was crowded, so I grabbed a tea tray and headed up to his study to hide.
That’s when I heard voices.
“Small-town girl’s been clueless for three years. Never once figured it out. Damien, your family picked the perfect
wife. So innocent.”
I recognized that voice. One of his friends.
Used to whisper things in my ear that’d make me blush.
“Old money knows what they’re doing. Makes me want to get myself one.”
I froze outside the door.
Nine guys inside. Lounging on furniture, leaning against walls, looking like they’d walked off a magazine cover.
“Which one of us you think she likes best?”
I held my breath.
Honestly? I’d done pretty well for myself.
Figured they were deciding who’d be next.
My bet was on Preston-youngest of the group, still in college. Preppy type. Never had a girlfriend. Blushed
whenever I said hi.
I could ruin him in under five minutes.
But Damien, who’d been quiet this whole time, sat forward. Tapped his cigarette. Face tight.
“Doesn’t matter. My mom wants a grandkid.”

Someone laughed. “You’re giving in? You swore you’d never-”
“She’s got a heart condition. Not much time left. Wants to meet her grandkid before she goes.”
Fuck.
Well, that’s depressing.
