Chapter 5

Chapter 5

I slid into the passenger seat.

He watched me the entire time.

“He’s just a client. Says random stuff.” I reached over, touched his face. “Think he’s a little off, honestly. You’re not jealous, are you?”

Damien had never introduced me to his friends. Far as he knew, I’d never met any of them.

He tensed.

Then moved my hand away.

Released the brake. “Gotta drive.”

I pulled my knees up, eyes stinging. “It’s fine. I know you’re done with me.”

The car lurched forward, tires grinding pavement.

He looked over. His jaw flexed.

Opened his mouth. Closed it.

Kept driving.

I wrapped my arms around my legs. “You used to want me everywhere. By the windows. On the piano. Then you stopped letting me kiss you. And after that… only from behind…”

He hit the brakes hard.

I grabbed the dashboard.

Damien sat there, face unreadable, knuckles bone-white on the wheel.

Shoved his door open. “Need a cigarette.”

He actually got out. Beach was deserted. Wind messed up his hair even more.

I pressed my face to the window.

He looked miserable out there. Shoulders tight, clean lines under his shirt, that stupidly perfect profile. Perched on a

rock with one knee bent, smoking like he was in some indie film about rich people problems.

Bet he’s spiraling.

Perfect.

Locked the doors. Grabbed the blanket from the back. Went to sleep.

Knocking woke me up.

Damien looked wrecked. Shadows under his eyes, hair everywhere, shirt half-untucked. Leaning on the car, tapping the glass.

“Hey, baby~”

I unlocked it and reached out to fix his hair. “Sorry. Got nervous being alone. Didn’t mean to lock you out. You

should’ve woken me up.”

His face went darker.

Because he’d been banging on that window for an hour. Phone was still inside, just out of reach.

I rested my head on his shoulder. “You’re too nice. Freezing out there all night just so I could sleep.”

He stared at me.

Then his hand caught the back of my neck and pulled me in for a kiss,

First time kissing my actual husband.

I pushed him back.

He went still.

“It’s the middle of the day. We shouldn’t-”

I’m just a girl from Kansas. I don’t know how you city people operate.
