Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Turned out the drink wasn’t even meant for me. Two socialites had spiked someone else’s glass. I just grabbed the

wrong one.

Dealt with the fallout. Got home after sunset.

Walked into darkness. Arms wrapped around me from behind.

“Damien, not now.”

Actually him this time.

He’d completely taken over the beach house. His clothes in the closet, his coffee in the kitchen, entire rooms rearranged to fit his work setup. Every corner had his fingerprints on it now.

Knew every inch of the place by heart.

Bed dipped under our weight.

“I want us to have a baby.”

Pushed him back, pulse jumping.

He went still. Reached for the nightstand, shoulders dropping. “Too fast. I know.”

“It’s been three months.”

Flipped the light on. He squinted at me,

“This isn’t working. We should divorce.”

He let go of whatever he’d been holding. Both hands on my arms now. “We’re not doing that. This is permanent.

“If you don’t want kids, fine. I’ll handle it. Get a vasectomy. Whatever it takes.”

Pause.

“But you’ve been different.” I looked past his face-easier that way. “You used to be… I don’t know. Better. Lately you’re just…”

Trailed off. Let him fill in the blanks.

Chapter 12

“Maybe you’re just not attracted to me.”

Watched something break behind his eyes.

No man wants to hear he’s not measuring up.

He left the room.

Came back thirty seconds later. Crushed me against his chest. “I can fix this. Just give me a chance.”

Didn’t stick around to see his plan.

Applied for a new passport under my maiden name. Booked a one-way ticket.

This city was a ticking time bomb.

My sister picked me up at JFK.

“You’re actually doing this? Leaving all of them behind?”

“Stay here, end up pregnant with a Sinclair heir.”

Had more money than I’d ever spend.

“Besides, I got three months with the real deal before I bounced. Fair trade.”

“Plenty of hot guys in Europe.”

She laughed, “God, I should’ve run when I had the chance. Now I’m stuck with mine. They’ve completely ruined me for anyone else.”

Slid into the backseat. Driver looked like he’d walked off a runway.

Something felt wrong, though.
