Emily ́› eyes turned red. “I didn’t. Whit, don’t put this on me. In this family. I want you to marry Carter more than anyone else. You’ve really got me wrong”
Whitney slammed her coffee cup down. “Alright, don’t waste your time on me. I won’t buy your lies. Save all that fa

“I’m not him. Whatever you say to me, it’s just noise.“
Whitney was just about to stand when suddenly, someone rushed up from behind, snatched the coffee cup off the table, and hurled it right at her.
“Whitney, stop picking at Emily,” Tina shouted, jumping in to stand up for Emily.
The scalding coffee splashed all over Whitney’s chest, and she sucked in a sharp breath from the pain.
Her shirt was drenched, coffee dripping down her neck, and her pale skin flushed red almost instantly.
A staff member hurried over. “Ma’am, are you alright?”
A sly smile flickered at Emily’s lips, gone in a heartbeat as she put on a worried face. “Whit, are you okay? Tina, how could you just throw coffer at her like that?”
Tina buffed. “She was totally talking smack about you Emily, you’re way too soft. Didn’t you hear what she said?”
Even Whitney’s best manners couldn’t hold up against these two troublemakers. She was so angry that her chest felt tight.
She turned to the clerk, keeping her composure. “Could I get some tissues and a cup of hot water, please? Thanks”
Tina, clearly riled by Whitney’s calm, kept pushing “Whitney, just wait. I’m going to tell Carter every word you said today. He’ll make you pay for this

glanced away, not really paying attention. She just figured it was a coincidence that Klein’s car happened to be passing
Okay. I’ll call him right now,” Emily replied.

Klein sat in the back seat, his eyes locked on Whitney’s neck, all red and raw. His brows knitted together as he asked, “Does it hurt
Whitney hadn’t really felt it until he looked at her, and suddenly, it stung all over again. “It’s not too bad, just stings a bit.
“Honestly, I just need some burn cream. It’ll be fine in a couple of days”
But she couldn’t shake the feeling that Klein’s expression turned even colder after she said that.
“Is this how you always just ignore taking care of yourself?” Klein asked.
Whitney mumbled, “I’m not ignoring it.”
“It’s just a burn, no big deal. When I first started cooking, I used to get splashed by hot oil all the time. I always dealt with it on my own. By the way, Tina probably got burned way worse than I did, thought Witney.
“It’s your own body. If you can’t even bother to care about it, why should anyone else?” Klein said.
Those words stung, leaving Whitney feeling choked up inside.
She pressed her lips together. “Uncle Klein, can you have your driver pull over? I’ll just take a cab on my own.”
There was a touch of grievance in her voice.
She did care about herself, but it was just that no one ever really looked out for her.
The only person who truly cared for her was her grandma, and now that her health was getting worse, Whitney couldn’t ask
for more.
Klein realized his tone had been off. He’d let his concern get the better of him.
“Sorry, Whit. Be good, okay? We’ll be at the hospital soon, and it won’t hurt anymore,” Klein comforted.
Whitney felt his hesitant hand rest on her head, giving her a gentle pat.
