Whitney was kicking herself inside. She wished she could just bite her tongue off.
She kept her head down, stammering with an awkward laugh. “Uncle Klein, I was just joking.”
Klein’s dark eyes stayed fixed on her, watching her ears burn red, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. “I’m not joking. You’re Carter’s fiancée. You’re like family to me. I don’t mind.”
“But I do mind,‘ Whitney thought, blinking.
They weren’t really family. Soon, she was about to call off her engagement to Carter, and after that, they might barely see each other at all.
With a click, Klein unlocked the car door, his voice even huskier than before. “It’s getting late. Just go home.”
“OK,” Whitney mumbled.
She got out of the car and wandered back to her apartment in a daze. It wasn’t until she was inside that her heartbeat finally began to settle.
Before she could even process what had just happened, her phone rang. It was Ivan.
“Hey, Whitney, are you home yet?” Ivan asked, sounding a little worried.
Whitney smiled, “Yeah, I’m home. You and Frank made it back too, right?”
“Yeah, I got a driver to take him home. I’m still on the road,” Ivan replied.
Ivan hesitated, then asked, “Whitney, Mr. Harris didn’t do anything weird in the car, did he?”
Whitney froze, her face heating up all over again. “Of course not. Boss, what are you even thinking? Mr. Harris just saw I couldn’t get a ride and offered to drive me home, that’s all.”
Ivan let out a sigh of relief. “Good. But Whitney, did you know Mr. Harris before today?”
Whitney had no intention of talking about all that messy stuff with the Harris family, so she firmly denied it. “Nope, never met him before.”
“It was my first time meeting him today,” she added.
Ivan nodded thoughtfully. “Alright, I get it. Whitney, I don’t really know Klein, but don’t let that pretty face fool you. He’s not someone you want to mess with.
“Mr. James Harris skipped over his eldest son and put Klein in charge of the entire Harris Group. That alone should tell you how powerful he is. People like him? We’re better off staying out of his way.”
Whitney pressed her lips together, catching the hint in Ivan’s words, and just smiled it off. “Relax, Boss. Just because someone gave me a lift doesn’t mean I’ll start thinking he’s interested in me.

“And I’m not the kind to chase after someone just because they come from money.”

Ivan let out a soft sigh. “Don’t blame me for being nosy, but in their circle, it’s all about being from the right family. I just don’t want you to get played.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t get fooled again,” Whitney said.
After getting burned once, there was no way Whitney was letting herself get played twice.
Besides, she knew deep down that Klein was just being a gentleman. He only offered her a ride out of
courtesy.
The next day at the law firm, Ivan didn’t mention last night’s dinner, and Whitney kept quiet as well.
Valerie, the curious one, leaned in and asked, “So, how did the dinner go yesterday?”
Whitney stayed silent, while Frank, being his usual carefree self, didn’t give a second thought to Klein offering Whitney a ride.
“Not bad. Ivan’s meeting with Calvin this afternoon. I think we’ve got it in the bag,” Frank said with a grin.
Valerie gasped, nearly choking on her excitement. “Wait, are we really about to land the contract?”
Popping the champagne before the deal was signed was the most terrible thing in this business.
Whitney shot Valerie a look, her brows furrowing just a bit. “Valerie, keep it down.”
Valerie quickly clapped a hand over her mouth, but her excitement was written all over her face.
If Ivan could snag the Harris Group contract, their team would finally beat Hector’s crew at the firm.
But when Ivan came back that afternoon, he looked anything but happy.
As he passed Whitney’s desk, he tapped it lightly. “Come to my office.”
Whitney followed him into his office and closed the door.
“What’s up, Boss? Did the meeting not go well this afternoon?” Whitney asked.
Ivan sighed, “As I was heading out, I caught sight of Hector just sitting in their lounge.”
Whitney’s face fell. “No way. Is Mr. Fischer trying to steal the deal?”
Ivan raised an eyebrow and scoffed, “He wouldn’t have the guts.”
Yesterday, Ivan thought the contract was in the bag, but today, Calvin kept stalling and even said it wasn’t his call to make.
“Anyone can have this contract, but not Hector,” Ivan said, his voice low and unyielding.

Hector and Ivan were rivals at the firm, always at odds, and stealing clients from each other was just business
as usual.
Whitney pressed her lips together. “Boss, you’ve got seniority over him, and you have way more experience. If Harris Group goes with PrimeBridge, you’d be their top choice. Just don’t worry about it.”
She didn’t say this because she thought Klein would hand them the contract for sure. She just trusted Ivan to get the job done.
“Alright, I’ll check things out at Harris Group in a few days and see where we stand. Get back to work,” Ivan said.
The afternoon zipped by, and when Whitney checked the time, she realized she was already ten minutes late getting off work.
She’d promised Sabrina she’d visit today, and she wasn’t going to bail on her.
She was even thinking about using this chance to finally come clean to the older folks in the Harris family about breaking off the engagement.
The wedding was almost here, and if she waited any longer, she’d have no way to justify it to the Harris family.

Carter kept his face icy and stern, glancing at the front door of Harris Manor every few minutes.
“Sir, are you waiting for someone?” one of the maids asked.
Carter just shook his head, leaving the staff scratching their heads in confusion.
“If he’s not waiting for anyone, then why does he keep staring at the door like he’s expecting someone to show up?‘ they wondered.
None of them knew that ever since Carter realized his fiancée had blocked him yesterday, his mood had hit rock bottom.
