As soon as Whitney walked in, Sabrina greeted her with a warm smile. Oh, you made it, Whit.”

Sabrina pulled Whitney in and sat her down right next to her, but Whitney still felt a bit awkward about it.

Sabrina had always been nice to her, but today, she was going all out with the attention.

James heard Whitney’s voice and came downstairs from his study.

Whit, just got off work, huh? Have you been busy at work lately? You look slimmer,James said with a warm smile.

Whitney felt a bit awkward with everyone fussing over her. Grandpa, work’s been a bit busy lately, but I’m managing.

That’s good to hear. You’re always so capable. How’s that burn on your neck? Is it healed up now?James asked.

Whitney was a little taken aback, thinking, How did they even know I got burned?

She instinctively reached up and touched her neck, just shrugged it off with a smile. It’s fine now. It’s not hurting at all.

James shot a glare at Carter, who was just standing off to the side, clearly annoyed. Carter, get over here.

Come apologize to Whitney.

Whitney raised an eyebrow, watching as Carter reluctantly walked over. She just smiled, It’s not necessary. He wasn’t the one who hurt me.

She didn’t need anyone’s apology. It was not like anyone really meant it. Apology or not, she couldn’t care less.

No, he should apologize. Carter is just careless sometimes, always caught up with work. It’s not that he doesn’t care about you, Whitney, so don’t hold it against him,Sabrina spoke up.

Carter took a deep breath, head down, eyes fixed on the floor. Sorry.

Say it louder,James barked, getting even more annoyed.

Carter spoke up, his voice a little louder, Sorry, I really didn’t know you got burned.

Whitney couldn’t help but sneer to herself, Like it would matter if he knew. Would he ever put me before his sweet sister?

Klein lounged back, legs crossed, giving Carter a long look. Emily’s turn now.

Carter frowned, Uncle Klein, this really has nothing to do with Emily. She’s innocent. She didn’t know Tina would go off like that out of nowhere.”

Klein narrowed his eyes. Oh? Then why don’t you tell us, Emily? Why did you go looking for Whitney?

Emily bit her lip, her face as pale as a ghost. Uncle Klein, I

That’s enough. Carter, shut your mouth,James snapped, brandishing his cane threateningly at him.

Then his piercing gaze landed on Emily. Emily, apologize.”

Carter glanced at Emily, worry written all over his face. He knew if he spoke up for her again, she’d just end up in more trouble.

Emily clutched the edge of her shirt, steeling herself. Whitney, I’m sorry. I really had no idea Tina would freak out and throw stuff at you like that.”

Whitney gave a faint smile. Alright, I got it.”

A glimmer of hope flashed in Emily’s eyes. Whitney, you’re always so understanding. You’ll forgive me, won’t you?

Whitney gave her a cool look. Milly, are you forcing me to forgive you now?

Since we’re all laying things out on the table today, there’s something I want to say too. I already talked to Carter about this a while back, Grandpa. Not sure if he ever told you.

Carter’s heart skipped a beat. He thought, What is she up to now? Is she seriously about to tell Grandpa she wants out of the engagement?

Sabrina’s heart gave a sudden jolt. She quickly reached out and grabbed Whitney’s hand, forcing a nervous laugh. Come on, Whitney, whatever it is, let’s talk after dinner, okay? It’s almost seven. Bet you’re starving by

now.

George, who’d been silent the whole time, looked over at Sabrina and seemed to catch on. Yeah, let’s eat first. Dad, why don’t we get started with dinner?

Klein got up, smirking at Emily, whose face was as pale as a ghost, then shot a look at Carter, who was wearing a stormy expression.

At that moment, Carter was seriously worried Whitney would actually spill the truth.

He was terrified that if Whitney really said it, Emily would get packed off abroad for another five years all over again.

Everyone was distracted at dinner.

Whitney accepted Sabrina’s suggestion just now, but no matter what, she was going to make sure Sabrina heard her out today.

I’m full. I’m going back to my room.Emily was the first to set down her fork.

James glanced at her indifferently. OK.

Sabrina stepped in to keep things light. Milly, if you’re finished, go on upstairs.”

Then she gave George a look.

George got the hint and spoke up, Dad, I want to talk to you and Klein about that project.”

James looked a bit annoyed. You have to talk about it now?

Dad, it’s pretty urgent,” George said.

James had no choice but to follow them upstairs, but before he left, he said, Whitney, don’t wait for me. Just

go

ahead and eat. I’ll be back down soon.”

Sabrina had smoothly cleared the room, making sure everyone else was gone.

Whitney picked up on the hint and set down her fork, knowing Sabrina wanted a private chat.

Carter, go upstairs and grab that box for me. Go on, hurry!Sabrina urged.

Carter gave Whitney a lingering look before heading upstairs.

Once Carter was gone, Sabrina grabbed Whitney’s hand. Whit, I’m really sorry you’ve had to deal with all this. My son is a nerd sometimes. Don’t let it get to you.

But hey, you two have stuck it out for five years to get here, and the wedding’s just around the corner. Just try to forgive that kid for being a little immature, alright?

Trust me, once you’re married, if he ever upsets you again, I’ll set him straight. And even if I don’t, his grandpa definitely won’t let him off easy. Don’t stay upset, honey. I honestly adore you. I’m just counting down the days till your wedding.

Whitney gave a soft smile and replied, But Sabrina, I’ve already decided not to marry him. Didn’t Carter tell you guys?

The day we failed to get the license, I knew right then I wasn’t going to marry him.

Sabrina’s smile faltered for a moment. “Whit, be honest with me. Has Carter been giving you a hard time? If he has, just tell me. I’ll stand up for you.

But with the wedding just days away, I really don’t like hearing you talk about not going through with it.

Whitney sneered inwardly, She keeps acting like she cares about me, but come on, she will of course back up her own son.

Whitney said, Sabrina, I’ve spent five years convincing myself that Carter loves me. But even now, I’ve never once felt he loved me.

I know all his favorites. I was always his little shadow, trailing behind him.

When he finally introduced me to his friends, I felt so proud, thinking he finally fell in love with me.
