Chapter 217
When Whitney got home, she told Klein she didn’t have an assistant anymore
Klein was secretly thrilled, but he kept a straight face and pretended not to care
“Honey, do you want me to get Townsend to find you a female assistant?” Klein asked.
Whitney smirked and rolled her eyes. “Are you sure you want to ask Townsend to get me an assistant? What af sh to be a lesbian? Are you going to have her reassigned too?”
Klein could tell Whitney was holding a bit of a grudge, and he scratched his nose awkwardly.
“Honey, I was wrong. Forget about the assistant. Maybe I’ll just ask Townsend to go easy on you,” Klein, said, trying to ou innocent.
Whitney couldn’t help but laugh. “Look at you, acting all grown up.”
Honestly, she was just a little annoyed that Klein was always sticking his nose into her work, even if he claimed it was for her own good.
But at least he knew when to back off.
Whenever she pushed back against his bossy side, he’d immediately dial it down.
That was the kind of tacit understanding they’d developed after being married for so long.

At the law firm, Whitney turned to Valerie.
“Hey Valerie, I didn’t ask my family to send lunch today. How about we eat out together?” Whitney suggested.
Whitney was getting a little tired of the usual healthy meals from home and wanted to try something different for a change.
Valerie was glued to her phone, giggling like a schoolgirl every now and then.
Whitney looked at her, puzzled, and waved her hand in front of Valerie’s face. “Hey, Valerie, what are you spacing out about?”
Valerie snapped out of it. “Huh? Whitney, did you say something to me?”
Whitney blinked. “Yeah, I was asking what you wanted for lunch. Wanna/grab lunch together at that new spot downstairs! My family isn’t sending food today.”
They were always a great team at work.
They loved checking out every new spot downstairs, and Valerie was always game for a mea
But today, she actually turned Whitney down, which was pretty unusual.
Whitney grinned. “So, you got lunch plans today?”
Valerie glanced away, looking a bit guilty. “Yeah, a friend’s coming over to hang out. Haha, Whitney, you should go eat with Candy and the others.”
Whitney nodded, clearly lost in thought, ‘So Valerie’s got something going on today, huh?‘ she mused to herself.

Chapter 217
At lunchtime, Candy leaned over to Whitney.
“Hey Whitney, have you noticed Valerie’s been acting a little weird lately?” Candy asked.
Whitney raised her eyebrows. “What do you mean by weird?”
“Yeah, usually when we have lunch, we’re all about the gossip. But lately, she’s just glued to her phone, barely says a word. and keeps giggling at her phone,” Candy said.
“So, we all believe that Valerie’s definitely seeing someone!” Candy added.
Whitney opened her mouth, and then it hit her.
“It’s totally normal for Valerie to have a boyfriend. Maybe her family set her up on a blind date,” Whitney said.
Valerie had always complained about her family setting her up on boring, awkward blind dates almost every week. She was totally numb to it by now.
‘Did she actually end up with someone?‘ Whitney wondered.
“No way! I don’t think her family set her up,” Candy said.
Whitney narrowed her eyes. “Why do you say that?”
“Yesterday, she came over and asked me if a pair of men’s shoes that cost 1,000 dollars looked nice,” Candy said.
“I told her they were pretty nice, and she just walked off all happy. Seriously, she’s only just started seeing this guy. You don’t think she’s gotten herself tangled up with some kind of playboy, do you?” Candy added.
Whitney’s face grew serious. Something about this didn’t sit right with her.
‘Sure, it’s totally normal for couples to give each other little gifts when they’re dating,‘ Whitney thought to herself.
But it’d only been a week since Valerie started dating this guy.
‘Is she really spending that much on a pair of shoes after just one week?‘ Whitney thought.
That was like a third of her paycheck.
“And you know, you shouldn’t buy shoes for a guy. If you do, he’ll just run away,” Candy said.
“Come on, who told you that old wives‘ tale?” Whitney asked.
“Whatever, believe it or not,” Candy said.
Whitney couldn’t help but laugh. Suddenly, she felt like doing something unorthodox.
“Candy, you guys go on ahead. I’m gonna check out the shop next door and maybe buy something.” Whitney said.
Whitney had never bought shoes for Klein before. ‘Will he really run away if I buy him shoes?‘ she thought, smirking to herself.
During lunch break, Ryan got a message from Whitney, which was unusual.
[Hey Ryan, do you know what shoe size Mr. Harris wears? I’m asking you on the down–low, so don’t tell him, okay?] Whitney
texted.
Ryan thought to himself, Is Whitney planning a surprise for Mr. Harris?‘

‘Perfect timing, Ryan thought. “The finance department botched the third–quarter numbers, and the GFO pracncilly melted under Mr. Harris’s death stare!
Whitney giving him a gift might actually lift his spirits, Ryan mused, perking up at the idea.
[He usually wears a size 43.5, so he goes with a 44.] Ryan texted back.
Whitney got the message and couldn’t help but be a little surprised. ‘Huh, Klein’s feet are actually pretty big, he thought to
herself.
She browsed around the men’s shoe store and finally picked out a pair just like the ones he always wore.
Of course, they couldn’t compare to those high–end custom shoes he used to buy, but with the price tag close to 30.000 dollars, Whitney figured that was already expensive enough.
With her shopping bag in hand, Whitney was about to head back to the law firm when she suddenly spotted Valerie in a high–end men’s suit store.
‘Didn’t she say she was meeting a friend for lunch?‘ Whitney thought, raising her eyebrows.
‘So she’s actually out shopping for her boyfriend?‘ she mused.
This place specialized in custom suits, and one couldn’t get anything decent here for less than 10,000 dollars
Whitney could accept that Valerie was buying her boyfriend a pair of 1,000 dollars shoes.
But a suit that cost more than 10,000 dollars? That was way out of Valerie’s league.
After all, the last time Valerie had her eye on a 7,000 dollars bag, she’d been talking about it for two months and still hadn’t bought it.
Whitney pursed her lips, watching as Valerie actually swiped her card. Something about this just didn’t feel right.
‘Valerie’s boyfriend is definitely not your average guy,‘ Whitney thought, a little uneasy.
