Chapter 36
Whitney looked up, feeling the lingering warmth surrounding her.
She sensed the hand resting on the small of her back.
Even through the thin fabric, she could feel the heat radiating from his palm.
Her heart skipped a beat. “Mr. Harris, why are you here?”
She didn’t notice how flushed her cheeks were, nor how a few strands of hair clung messily to her face.
Her bright eyes sparkled like the most dazzling stars, lively and mischievous, adding an irresistible charm.
Klein’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly; his deep eyes flickered with a fire that could ignite a prairie blaze.
Before he could say a word, voices grew louder behind them.
“Where did you just go?” a man said

“I thought I heard someone banging on the front door, so I went to check. Damn it, turns out some stray cat was causing all the noise,” another man replied.
A voice urged. “Alright, let’s get back quickly. Don’t want any trouble.”
Hearing their footsteps approaching, Whitney instinctively pulled Klein’s hand off her waist and turned to run toward the back door of the villa.
‘Mr. Harris, we have to get out of here,” she said.
Her pink skirt fluttered gracefully in the breeze.
The tall, elegant man followed her calmly, matching her pace toward the back entrance.
The lock on the back door was bolted from the inside with a key.
Whitney frowned, glancing up at the tall wall with worry. “Mr. Harris, won’t you just throw me out?”
Klein bent down casually and patted his own shoulder. “Come on, get up.”
Whitney bit her lip. “Isn’t this a bit inappropriate?”
After all, in some ways, he was still her client.
Before she could finish, she heard the bodyguard’s footsteps closing in behind them. Without hesitation, she stepped on his shoulder and used his strength to hoist herself onto the wall ledge.
Klein placed one hand on the ledge and, in just two seconds, easily swung over.
Standing outside the villa, he opened his arms toward Whitney. “Jump.”
This time, Whitney jumped decisively, a thrill rising inside her
Even though she looked particularly disheveled, she couldn’t help but feel an inexplicable rush.

Klein half–wrapped his arm around her waist. “Let’s go. Get in the car.”
The black Maybach was parked by the roadside.
By the time the bodyguards caught up, all they saw was a trail of exhaust smoke disappearing down the street.
Whitney patted her chest and said, “Mr. Harris, thank you for saving me today.”
Inside the car, under Klein’s prominent nose, his thin lips curled into a faint smile. “Just a verbal thank you?
“Back in the old days, a life debt meant offering yourself in return.”
Whitney’s heart tightened abruptly.
“Wait, what did Mr. Harris mean by that?‘ she thought, a little flustered.
Before she could react, Klein’s phone vibrated loudly. He turned on the speaker.
“Hello,” he said with a hint of impatience.

The person on the other end flinched slightly and carefully reminded, “Mr. Harris, the flight to Lillyand is scheduled to take off ir, an hour and a half. Are you already on your way?”
Whitney suddenly realized he was rushing to a business trip.
“Oh Klein replied coolly, “Got it.”
After hanging up, Whitney felt a bit guilty. “Mr. Harris, I didn’t know you had things to attend to. Now that I’m fine, you can just drop me off at that convenience store. I’ll grab a taxi home.”
Klein pressed his lips together and asked, “Is this okay? What if someone drags you back again?”
A faint smile spread across Whitney’s lips. “No way. I’m not that dumb to get caught twice. I’m going to hail a cab and find James to make the breakup official.”
Once she made it clear, no matter how hard they pushed, it would be settled for good.
Klein raised an eyebrow. ‘Wait, so she escaped just to call off the engagement?‘ he wondered.
“You’ve thought this through?” he said in a calm voice, tinged with a barely noticeable excitement.
Whitney nodded firmly, her expression resolute. “Of course.”
Since he had to attend this business trip in person, time was tight.
So Klein followed her wishes and dropped her off at the convenience store, reminding her as he got out of the car, “Message me when you get there”
As if worried she might misunderstand, he added, “Or you can send it to Lena.”
Whitney smiled softly, “Will do.”
She watched the black sedan vanish into the night. It was 9 p.m., and it would take about 40 minutes to reach the Harris
Manor from here.
Although visiting at night was a bit bold, Whitney couldn’t wait any longer.

Meanwhile, Laura had just arrived at the clubhouse when she got a call from the family’s bodyguards.
“What? She got away?” Laura snapped.
“Useless. Every single one of you can’t even keep an eye on one woman? What’s the point of having you around?” she shouted.
Fuming, Laura stormed into the private room where they were. Samuel’s assistant was waiting outside the door.
“Where’s Mr. Moore?” she asked, noticing the assistant’s uneasy expression as he stared at the tightly shut door, narrowing her eyes.
“M–Mrs. Moore, what brings you here?” the assistant stammered.
Laura snorted coldly, “Can’t I come?”
I’ll give the people inside one minute. You go in and tell him to come out fast. Otherwise, I’m kicking the door down,” she demanded.
The assistant’s heart nearly jumped out of his chest.
What a nightmare. Mr. Moore sneaking around, and now Mrs. Moore showing up to catch her in the act, the assistant thought.
He slipped to the corner and lowered the phone’s volume. “Mr. Moore, Mrs. Moore is outside. Maybe you should come out?”
Ten minutes later, Samuel adjusted his suit and walked out, standing tall.
He frowned slightly. “What are you doing here?”
Laura noticed the lipstick stain on his neck and took several deep breaths before suppressing her anger. “Your precious daughter jumped out the window and ran off, and you still have the nerve to mess around here?”
Everyone knew what was really going on.
Samuel’s face flushed. Don’t talk nonsense. Where is she? Why would she run away?”
Theard she was taken away by a guy. You’d better start contacting people to find her. Otherwise, no one’s wedding will go smoothly the day after tomorrow,” Laura warned.
Carter was driving Emily out for a late–night snack. “Milly, you barely ate anything at dinner.”
“Stop thinking about losing weight. You’re already so thin,” he added.
Emily lowered her head shyly. “Thanks, Carter. But being thinner makes me look better on camera.”
With her new song coming out soon, Carter had already arranged for her to appear on several variety shows
Because of this, there was no way she would go on blind dates with some Playboy.

Carter smiled indulgently, “I really can’t do anything about you.”
A dull pam throbbed in his stomach. He rubbed it with one hand.

When Emily saw this, concern spread across her face. “Carter, is it your stomach acting up? Let me massage it for you.”
As she spoke, her fingers reached toward his abdomen.
The delicate little hand barely touched the thin fabric of his shirt before Carter instinctively grabbed her palm with his right hand.
“Emily, quit messing around,” he said.
In that back–and–forth interruption, Carter didn’t notice the blue taxi approaching from the opposite direction.
Bang.
The two cars‘ front ends collided. Carter jerked forward, hitting the steering wheel, while Emily screamed in fright.
Inside the taxi, Whitney let out a muffled groan, feeling a sharp impact against her shoulder followed by a stabbing pain that radiated deep within.
The taxi driver wasn’t any better off; blood dripped steadily down his forehead.
Passersby quickly got out of their cars to check. “Call 911. This driver’s bleeding.”
Carter, wincing in pain, unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to the woman in the passenger seat. “Emily, are you okay?”
Emily rubbed her forehead. “I’m fine, Carter.”
She had also overheard the bystanders. “Hey, Carter, do you think the people in the other car are okay?”
Carter frowned. “Don’t move. I’ll get out and help you down.”
He had no time to worry about anyone else’s fate. No one was more important than his precious little sister.
Helping Emily out, Carter kept his gaze fixed on the taxi across from them; neither of the two inside looked unscathed.
A bystander opened the driver’s door and called out, “Hey, are you alright?”
The driver pressed his hand against the bleeding wound. “I’m fine, just a little dizzy.”
