Chapter 46
After just a minute, Whitney lifted her head again, the moisture in her eyes completely gone.
“Feeling any better?” Klein asked.
Whitney gave a faint smile. “A little. I’m fine, Mr. Harris. Really, I’m okay now.”
“Whitney, you won’t marry Carter,” Klein said.
Whitney’s heart suddenly skipped a beat.
Klein’s eyes narrowed for a moment. “So I’m not your elder anymore. You don’t have to call me Mr. Harris.
I’m seven years older than you, so calling me by my name shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
Whitney didn’t know what to say.
Her voice was rough as she rasped, “Why?”
Klein blinked, repeating, “Why what?”
“Why do you want me to call you by your name?” Whitney asked.
Klein’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he replied lazily, “Guess I like how you pronounce my name.”
“I’m serious. Take your time to think about it. Carter’s my nephew. He owes you, and as his uncle, I can make it up for him,” Klein said.
Klein’s gaze lingered on her face, noticing how she’d lost so much weight in just a few days.
“Whatever you ask for, just say the word. I’ll agree to anything,” he added.
“Anything?” Whitney repeated, her eyes narrowing with a hint of doubt.
“That’s right,” Klein said, his tone unwavering. “Anything you want. Just say the word. Whatever it is, I’ll make it happen.”
Anyone else watching would have sensed that something was off.
Right now, Whitney was drowning in grief, unable to think straight.
“Got it,” she managed to say, her lips barely moving. “Thank you, Klein.”
“No problem. Just remember what I said today. I’ve got something to take care of, so I’ll head out now,” Klein replied.
Klein walked away with a spring in his step.
He echoed her words in his mind, imitating her tone.
‘Klein,‘ he repeated to himself.
‘Not a bad start, he thought.

Next time, he couldn’t wait for her to call him “Honey.”

Tina stormed off, her mind in turmoil. ‘Why would Klein actually go out of his way to talk to that bitch?’ she fumed.
That look in his eyes–an undeniable gentleness–was something she’d never seen from him before.
Just imagining Whitney cozying up to someone even more powerful made Tina feel physically ill.
Carter and Emily were the last ones to arrive. They hadn’t come with the rest of the Harris family.
After placing a white rose for Patricia, Carter scanned the room but couldn’t find Whitney anywhere.
Emily noticed his searching gaze, her heart tightening with irritation, but she kept her cool on the surface.
She acted as if it was nothing and asked, “Carter, what are you looking for?”
Carter shook his head, forcing a smile. “Nothing, really.”
Carter turned to Emily and said, “Hey, Emily, I’m just gonna hit the bathroom. Wait here for me, alright?”
It wasn’t just Klein who knew how much Patricia meant to Whitney. Carter, who’d been with her for five years, understood it just as well.
‘Is she crying her eyes out right now?‘ Carter wondered. Just imagining that tough, independent woman showing such a vulnerable side made him want to see her.
Even if she was annoyed with him or resented him, he couldn’t stand the thought of her going through all this alone today.
“Carter, what are you looking for?” Tina called out from the front entrance.
“Oh, Tina, have you seen Whit? Did you spot her anywhere?” Carter asked.
Tina’s eyes narrowed, jealousy flaring up inside. ‘Seriously? He’s also after that bitch?
Trying to keep her voice steady, she asked, “Oh, you’re looking for Whit?”
“Yeah, she cared a lot about Patricia. Just wanted to have a word with Whitney,” Carter said.
Even though the wedding had only just been called off, it felt to Carter as if far more time had passed.
“Whit’s always been so tough. I just want to say a couple words to her. Maybe it’ll help her feel better,” he said.
Carter didn’t even notice how self–assured he was being.
He really thought that just seeing him and hearing a few comforting words would be enough for Whitney to snap right back to her old self, like he was some kind of miracle cure.
Tina couldn’t help but gloat, ‘Man, if Carter caught Whit all snuggled up to Klein, that would be a hell of a
scene.

“Carter, you’re honestly too nice. After everything she’s put you through, you still care about her. Just now, I saw her talking with some guy right around the corner. Want me to take you over?” Tina said, feigning
concern.
“A guy?” Carter’s brows knit together, looking a little thrown.
What guy? Who the hell?‘ Carter thought, his mind spinning.
Tina gave him a sly, almost guilty look. “Maybe just pretend I never said anything, alright?”
That only made Carter’s frown tighten even more.
“Around the corner, you said?” Carter’s voice was icy.
