Chapter 45

By the time Samuel arrived at the hospital, Whitney’s tears had already dried.

She just sat there in the hospital room, looking totally out of it. Her eyes only moved a little when Samuel

walked in.

Mom, why did you have to leave so suddenly?Samuel cried out, dropping to his knees by the bed.

He tried his best to squeeze out some tears, but not a single one came, just a lot of noise and drama.

Whitney looked at him coldly, completely detached. She could tell he was just putting on a show, and inside, she felt nothing but emptiness.

Whit, don’t be too sad. Your grandma’s in a better place now. She’ll be fine,Samuel said, trying to sound comforting.

Leave everything else to me,he added.

Samuel was Patricia’s only son, and Whitney wouldn’t turn him away at a time like this. It was his job to handle things and mourn for her.

At the funeral home chapel, Laura finally saw Whitney again.

It had only been a day, but Whitney’s eyes had changed.

A coldness mixed with sharpness. Her quiet stare unsettled Laura.

Whitney said little, quietly handing a white rose to each visitor.

Laura, always scheming, pulled Samuel aside after seeing off a group of mourners.

What about Mom’s 5% shares? You’re not really going to give them to Whitney, are you?she whispered.

Samuel hesitated. Let’s talk about the shares later. How are you supposed to bring it up to her now? Just look at her eyes. They give me the chills.

The Moore family knew all too well how much Patricia meant to Whitney.

Alright, but we need to handle this quickly after your mom’s buried,” Laura said.

Neither Samuel nor Laura noticed the slender figure hidden in the darkness, letting out a quiet, mocking chuckle.

Tina, your sister gives me the creeps. Didn’t your grandma always spoil her? How come she hasn’t even cried once?someone muttered.

Tina dabbed at her eyes, putting on a show. Who knows? Maybe Whit’s just got a heart of steel. I’m nothing like her. Ever since Grandma passed, my eyes have been all puffy from crying!

You’re just too kind, Tina. Not like her, cold to the bone, the other person chimed in.

Whitney heard every word, loud and clear.

Whitney shot Tina a cold look. “Come with me.

Tina hesitated, still uneasy under Whitney’s icy gaze. WWhat do you want?

Whitney scoffed, her voice cold. Scared of me?

Why should I?Tina retorted, forcing herself to act tough as she followed Whitney to the back.

Out of nowhere, Whitney suddenly had a dagger in her hand. Tina hadn’t even seen her move.

Whitney grabbed Tina by the throat with one hand, tracing the cold blade along her cheek, slow and deliberate. Her eyes were icy and ruthless. Tina had never seen her like this before.

Tina was forced to lift her chin, frozen in place. Her teeth were literally chattering. Whitney, you’re insane,” Tina stammered.

She meant it.

Tina’s face turned ghostly pale, terrified Whitney might slip and scar her for life.

Scared now?Whitney’s eyes flashed cold. Then stop messing with me. I don’t want to hear those words again. If I catch you causing drama at Grandma’s funeral one more time

The blade paused right at Tina’s throat. Whitney gave a cold snort. There’ll be a gap. You know what I mean, don’t you?

Whitney slipped the dagger away and walked off without a glance, leaving Tina still freaking out on the floor.

For a split second, Tina was sure Whitney had gone completely off the deep end.

That cold glint in Whitney’s eyes? Tina could feel that Whitney was actually out for her life.

Tina, crying, rushed straight to her mom.

She stammered out her story between sobs, leaving Laura’s face pale with shock.

Laura stared at her in disbelief, Are you saying Whit just threatened you with a knife?

Tina’s tears were pouring down her cheeks. Yeah, Mom, I just want to go home. Can I leave? I really don’t want to stay here anymore. What if she goes crazy on me and actually tries to kill me?

Laura never expected Patricia’s death would weigh so heavily on Whitney.

She handed Tina a tissue, trying to soothe her. Tina, you can’t leave today. Tons of important people are coming, and I heard Klein is coming too.

Whitney was just trying to scare you. She used to cry for days when her pet hamster died. She’d never actually hurt anyone,Laura said, trying to comfort her.

Laura coaxed her softly. Be good, Tina. Later, try to get Klein to remember you. Otherwise, the Harris family will only know Whit and won’t even know you exist. You’re our favorite, right?

With Laura’s soothing words, Tina finally calmed down.

Yeah, Whitney’s all bark and no bite, Tina scoffed to herself.

I’m the real princess of the Moore family. Mom loves me, and Dad backs me up. What do I have to be afraid of?she reassured herself.

Tina took the tissue and gently dabbed at the tears in the corners of her eyes. Okay, Mom, I get it. Just keep an eye on Whitney for me, alright?

Laura patted her hand. Don’t worry.”

When James showed up, he couldn’t help but get a little sentimental.

Patricia’s gone to join her best friend. Those two were thick as thieves when they were young. Now they’ll be together again on the other side,he thought.

He respectfully placed a white rose for Patricia.

Whit, don’t be too sad. It’s just how things go. None of us can escape it, you know? Just try to accept it,James said, trying to comfort her.

Whitney nodded, her face calm.

When Klein showed up and saw Whitney sitting there in total silence, it just didn’t sit right with him.

He opened his mouth to say something, but with all these people around, he couldn’t get a word out.

Meanwhile, Tina, in her black mourning dress, spotted Klein’s tall figure standing by Patricia’s portrait. A calculating glint flashed in her eyes.

Mom was right. Someone like Klein is a total catch. There’s literally no one else like him in all of Ravorport, Tina thought, her heart skipping a beat.

Now that James clearly feels a bit guilty toward our family, if I could actually land Klein, why would I ever have to worry about Whitney again?she mused, a sly smile creeping onto her lips.

Whitney watched as Tina tagged along behind Klein, frowning as she wondered what Tina was scheming this time.

Worried Tina might stir up trouble, Whitney followed after her.

As soon as Whitney stepped into the corridor, she caught Tina’s overly dramatic voice. Sorry, sorry, Klein. I tripped and spilled coffee on your suit. Here, let me wipe it off for you, Klein.

As she spoke, Tina’s hand moved in, itching to touch the hard lines beneath Klein’s suit. Her heart was thumping like crazy.

Klein’s voice was cold, and there was a clear look of disgust in his eyes. No. And for the record, we’re just
