Whitney’s mind was growing fuzzy. All she could feel was a burning heat, a restless urge that made her just want to pull at her clothes.
Warm hands wrapped around hers, the palms gently squeezing her delicate fingers. “Whitney.”
“Mm.” She frowned, feeling annoyed. “Let go… It’s burning.”
Klein’s voice was husky, and his warm breath brushed against her ear. “Just hold on. It’ll cool down soon. Come on, be good. Once we get to the hospital, you won’t feel burning anymore.”
Whitney struggled to sit up, her fair face stopping so close to Klein’s that barely a sheet of paper could fit between them.
“Mr. Harris?” she murmured.
Klein’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. “Call me Klein.”
“Oh, but I don’t want to,” she pouted.
Klein steadied her shoulders, keeping her from swaying. “Why, Whit? Why won’t you call me by my name?”
Whitney’s eyes were hazy as she poked his nose with her finger. “Because of you…”
“Your nephew and niece… I hate them…” Whitney pouted.
Klein was speechless, knowing she was not in her right mind.
He cleared his throat, not bothering to argue.
“Alright, maybe it’s not a good time,” he said softly.
Whitney wriggled unsteadily, but Klein’s arm kept her firmly in his embrace.
Suddenly, she pouted, and all the tears she’d been holding back finally spilled over.
“I’m sorry, Grandma. I couldn’t get the bracelet,” she choked out.
Her voice was thick with sobs, barely intelligible. “Grandma, you won’t blame me, right?”
Klein gently brushed his palm over her soft, fair cheek, and before Whitney even realized, he pulled a sparkling bracelet from his pocket and slipped it onto her wrist.
“Don’t cry, sweetheart. I won this for you at the auction,” he murmured.
Whitney dazedly lifted her wrist, her eyes staring blankly at the bracelet, totally spaced out.
“Where did you even get this? You know this counts as theft, right? People get hit with charges for this. Best case, it’s a fine, and worst case, it’s probation or a record that never goes away,” she blurted, all flustered.
Her fingers fumbled as she tried to pull the bracelet off. “I don’t want it. Take it back. I’m not getting

dragged into this. You stole it, so you deal with it.”
Klein thought, ‘If people knew she was drugged, they’d get it. Otherwise, they’d just think she’s drunk out of her mind.‘
“I didn’t steal it. I bought it,” Klein said, feeling a rush of heat in his gut as he managed a wry smile.
He warned sharply, “Keep it up, and you’ll regret it.”
Whitney suddenly sat up straight, her head drooping. That obedient look made Klein’s heart flutter with longing.
He took a deep breath, squeezed his eyes shut, and fought to push away all the thoughts he shouldn’t be having.
Finally, Marco pulled the car up to the hospital.

Dustin was just settling into his office after a long day of seeing patients when the door was suddenly slammed open.
‘Seriously, who the hell is it now?‘ Dustin grumbled to himself.
He looked up, irritation written all over his face, and his eyes widened in disbelief. “Klein, seriously? What are you doing here?”
‘Oh, look at that. He’s got a girl in his arms, Dustin thought, rolling his eyes.
Dustin glanced down and finally realized. ‘Wait a sec. Isn’t this the Moore girl?‘
“Cut the crap. She’s been dosed. Get a female doctor over here, now,” Klein snapped.
Dustin just stared, lost for words.
“You know exactly what to do, don’t you? So why’d you drag her here?” he said with a look of disdain.
Klein’s eyes flashed cold. “Do you think I’m some kind of beast?”
Usually, they’d joke around with Klein, but everyone knew that if they ever crossed the line with him, they’d regret it.
Dustin rubbed his nose, trying to play it cool. “Hey, I was just joking.”
“If I’m not laughing, it’s not a joke,” Klein shot back.
Realizing he’d crossed the line, Dustin hurried off to find a female doctor from the ER to check on Whitney.
As soon as the female doctor arrived, she glanced at Whitney lying on the bed and saw she was totally out
of it.
“This drug is really strong. She’s bitten her tongue in several places,” the doctor said, frowning.

The doctor checked her more carefully. “Her thighs, too. She’s pinched herself so hard.”

Behind the curtain, Klein’s face turned grim, and his chiseled features looked even colder and sharper.
Dustin felt the icy aura coming from Klein and instinctively stepped aside.
Right now, Klein was definitely not someone anyone wanted to mess with.
“I’ll start her on an IV. Are you her family? Here’s the bill,” the doctor said, handing over the slip.
Dustin was about to say it was fine, just to let her get treated first.
But before he could, Klein’s long, pale fingers took the bill. “Yeah, I’m her family. Thanks, doctor.”
Dustin was speechless.

“Hey, Aunt Laura, she got away,” Travis said.
Laura gasped. “What? How did she get away? How could she just vanish like that?”
“I found her in the bathroom, but then someone came out of nowhere and kicked me down. I got knocked out for a second, and when I looked up, she was gone.”
‘Someone actually came and saved her?‘ Laura thought, fuming.
“Was it a guy? Did you see his face at all?” Laura pressed.
Travis shook his head. “No, Aunt Laura.”
Laura rolled her eyes inwardly, ‘Ugh, what a moron.‘
“Alright, just go home,” she snapped.
Tina noticed her mom’s serious expression and leaned in to ask, “Mom, what’s wrong? Did Whitney get away?”
“Yeah,” Laura replied.
‘Damn, it’ll be way harder to pull something on her next time, Laura thought, frustrated.
It was an hour later when Whitney finally came to.
She felt weak all over and suddenly rubbed her eyes.
Then, a pair of deep eyes met hers.
“Klein?” she murmured.
Klein gave a slight nod. “Yeah, it’s me.”
